top 10 favourite DVD's

I have noticed around me recently the boom in people starting personal dvd collections (as opposed to rented) seems to be getting bigger everyday, much like records then cd's then video, did/do, thanks too to bit torrent, internet and JB's to name some.
Having recently bought a el cheapo but still surprisingly decent, chinese dse 6.1 system from dork smiths to add to the large 100hz tv for dvd enjoyment - its got me thinking
Most of my top ten are music dvd's - mostly copies of music concerts bought cheaply off the net.
This list is for dvd's you can watch multiple times over many years, not for ones you watch once or twice - which are still great obviously - just not many fit the multiple viewing criteria too me. Note this is only my faves atm - or this year - subject to change of course.

1/ Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - 'Live at the Quick 2002' (best band in the world imo - saw em live at the Gov a few years ago - scary!)
2/ Jeff Beck - Tokyo 1999 - Tokyo International Forum (few different quality versions of this one out there)
3/ Pat Metheny - 'Speaking of now live' Tokyo 2002 concert
4/ King Crimson - 'Live at Sheperds Bush Empire' 2000
5/ all three of the 'Lord of the Rings' Triology - counted here as one giant movie! hehe
6/ a few of the recent star wars series - just to enjoy the 100hz tv - dont like the stories much :P just for the million dollar effects
7/ 'O Brother, Where Art Thou' a deep south musical version of Homers Odyssey - love those 'soggy bottom boys' - high rotation
8/ 'Sin City' - that is still new tho - might not survive more plays
9/ 'Pitch Black' love any sci fi's shot at Coober Pedy no matter how low budget - 'red planet' is next purchase :-)) an oldie but still new to collection tho
10/ 2010 (the year we made contact) - like this better than the original

course there is millions of great dvd's of movies/concerts - this is just my current lot

as a guide - Like just about any movies by directors David Lean, John Carpenter, Robert Altman, Coen Brothers, Roman Polanski, David Lynch, Stanley Krubrick, any big budget Arnie movies in the predator vein, to many to mention actually, better stop now

Movies, any of the Monty Python series, I can watch them over and over as well as the Peter Sellers Pink Panther Series. As for the rest, I'm a junky for anything with a well done surround soundtrack.

Music Favourites; I like mine well recorded and I really can't separate them, sorry there's more than 10, not in any particular order.

Eagles, Hell freezes over. (Probably the best live recording I have ever heard).
John Mayall's 70th Birthday concert. (Blues, excellent recording quality, room shaking bass)
ACDC, Live at Dodington. (Best played at maximum volume)
ELO, Zoom. (once again very well recorded)
Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs Jailhouse Rock (live at Boggo Road Jail)
Queen Greatest Video Hits 1 (Excellent recording, especially considering it's vintage)
Sade, Lovers Live (ear as well as eye candy, the recording quality is superb)
Howard Jones 20th Aniversary concert. (one of the greats of Synthesised music)
Screaming Jets Rock On (Edgy Oz rock)
Robbie Williams Live at the Albert (Standards, the sort of music my parents loved)
Rod Stewart Great american songbook. (Same as above)
Harry Manx, Wild about Harry (Totally different performer, unusual and talented, does some Hendrix stuff on the Banjo as well)
Grace Knight Live at the Basement. (Gracy is excellent, as usual)
Supernatural Carlos Santana. (Good recording, some brilliant tracks)
Stevie Ray Vaughan Line at the eL Mocambo (won awards for over a decade after his death, his version of Voodoo Child is better than Hendrix)
Birtles Shorrock Goble, Full Circle (They're not the Little River Band but they sure as hell sound like it...)

I also like Billy Idol's live and unplugged. Very cool DVD.

Presently I'm watching The Who live at the Isle of wight festival DVD, It was punk before Punk ? I also have the live CD The Who, live at Leeds, It ROCKS. BTW I don't just listen to fossil rock :) My latest CD aquasition is the self titled CD by Aussie band Wolf Mother, It is the best CD since Powderfingers, Vulture street.

Two of my neighbours have respectively purchased all of Stargate Seasons 1-8 and all of Battlestar Galactica (classic and current). One of them also has all of Buffy. I picked up a bargain 2 box set of Space 1999. There's going to be some serious cross-road loaning happening. It's a long term project...

...and as of last weekend, I picked up the 1st season of Babylon 5. Gotta keep up with the neighbours!

I've just picked up On the Beach. The 1959 version with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner as well as the mini series with Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward. I've read the book many times, depressing yes, but it certainly hasn't dated much at all.

I havent seen one dvd mentioned ( that I recognise and have seen - and I have seen maybe at least 90% of listed ), that I didnt like/love (what are the odds?) - I knew astronomers had good taste :)
But maybe I do draw the line at a Howard Jones Concert :D srry Phil - i'm sure its good mate! I love stevie ray tho got a couple of those very nice!
Little story, ..was due to see SRV for first time in concert in London, and veryu excited - he had a string of shows like they have over there - not just one night like here :P - and I was going to get the ticket that day for two days time. And heard the very sad news almost on the way there - I remember thinking why couldnt it be Eric WWWHHHHHY!!!
