Solar – AR1158 in white light

Hello,

I managed to grab a couple of AVI’s this morning with the Mewlon 180, Tak x1.6 Extender and DMK31AF04, with a full aperture Baader astro-solar film filter.

There were some moments of quite good seeing but the clouds made it difficult to obtain full length AVI’s. Here is the best of the bunch cropped to 800x600 to lose the ragged edges. Processed in AVIStack v1.8.

Nice detail Dennis. Can I ask how many frames do you usually capture in an AVI?

Hi Derek

Hmm, I’m a little rusty with the DMK as well as Registax & AVIStack, as I haven’t used the camera and those applications in over 12 months (Registax 5 and AVIStack v1.8), so my choices are based on these limitations.

I used to experience problems with files larger than 1 Gb, although I understand R5 overcame that. However, given the age of my PC, I stick with 1250 frames which gives me a manageable file size of around 950 Mb.

My general experience has been that if I can harvest some 400-800 frames from a 1250 frame file, I can usually produce a reasonable image that will withstand Wavelet processing and minor tweaks in Photoshop.

Thanks for the reply Dennis .Managed a look at the Sun late this arvo in Ha and the active regions are really developing with what appears to be some solar flare action.As my scope is 0.5A when seeing permits the surface detail is spectacular.Hopefully we will all get some action tomorrow weather and time permitting.

Thanks guys – I appreciate your comments. Imaging sun spots in the heat of the day in SE Qld can be quite gruelling in the back garden – no observatory or indoors location for me!

The real killer is the stifling heat and copious perspiration resulting from the blanket over the head trick, to help shield the Notebook screen from the glare of the Sun for focusing.
