Im new here so hope its not bad form to start general chat threads before getting into the astro stuff...

I was in an Apple store in Brisbane today when all the staff started clapping and cheering, someone else in the shop told me it happens all the time, very odd to say the least. Anyone else seen this?

Cheers,
Mick

Possibly a bit like the Hard Rock Cafes, where the staff collectivley break out and sing along spontaneously to the music videos playing.

A bit of a google search pointed to a mac forum where it seems the clapping and cheering occurs whenever someone buys a macbook from them. A bit of an overeaction if true considering the point of the shop is to, you know, sell stuff....pointless backslapping methinks. If i ever buy a macbook i think i'll be ordering it on line, i dont fancy being cheered and clapped for buying something. Very embarrasing

There's a restaurant chain in Thailand that does similar. The wait staff do a little dance in involving clapping to music. I think it is funny.

i remember I got the shock of my life when I went to a Lonestar restaurant once for a birthday dinner (not mine thankfully!) and the staff all came up to the birthday girl and did a bit of a song and dance routine, it was hilarious but I really felt sorry for the poor kids employed and told they have to sing and dance for customers, they must have dreaded the birthday bookings!

No, that only happens at the Optus stores.:D

THis is a bizarre event that seems to happen at some Apple stores when a new client switches from PC to Mac and tells the staff that. I guess that the staff are generally pretty young and full of energy and they do that to "welcome" the new Mac user. It's not something that I'd want to be part of, but I haven't been to an Apple retail store since I can't remember. I deal with them directly via their business channels whose people thankfully don't clap. It is a bit dumb, but maybe that's part of their successful strategy?

I'll call this a segue, not a hijack! :P

As an ex-chemist, I love this great cartoon from my son! (thanks to xkcd.com)

That's bloody weird, imagine if people who sell Windows based PC's do that :)

That would be bloody embarassing I reckon - I'd have to 'clap' 'em up the side of the ear in good humour me thinks..

"Sn" is the chemical symbol for the metal tin. I'll go away now

Sounds intensely disturbing. Like some religious cult that caters to lunatics, led by a charismatic but evil individual who wants endless praise for his work and.......
Oh! :)

Oh dear lord, I had to watch a video called 007 where James bond is Au (Gold) as much as I love high school chemistry.. I HATED THESE!!! Thank you Erick for bringing up these supressed memories...

I've been to (NSW) Apple Stores numerous times and only ever seen clapping/cheering at store openings. Maybe Queenslanders are different? I guess the "switcher" hypothesis is the most plausible one.

Cheers

I don't apple-crap either. The only apple thing in my house is my daughter's ipod, which she bought herself. That's all there will ever be. No idea either

This is an interesting comment, and I respect it because we're all different - everyone has a bad experience with some brand or type gear at one time or other. I suppose that's enough to form some pretty strong opinions on. I've suffered far more Windows failures than Apple over my 30 years in IT, but that's my experience I guess.

As for the clapping bit, it'd embarrass the hell out of me and I personally wouldn't put up with it. I reckon that Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and crew would LOVE to experience that level of fanaticism over their products, but I doubt they'll ever see it...

Sorry, but they have, back when Windows 95 was launched. Queue's around the block at midnight, Rolling Stones playing, people chanting and cheering.

A long time between drinks though! That was MS marketing at its best, a long slide since then.

PETER!

That is the core of the problem.....

For bad puns like that you should be skinned alive!

What would your dear old Granny Smith think of such behaviour?!

You just had to go and stick your finger in the pie, didn't you?

I thought that with your Danish upbringing, you would think twice before seeding these forums with such drivel, especially when there are pink ladys who read this....

Delicious comments are welcome, however we would prefer if you didnt candy wrap them and made them a bit more appletising.....

What would Adam think?

Cheers ;)

Hi All,

Saw something very similar at a time-share presentation I went to in Honolulu a couple of months ago (I had no interest in it -- we got a free meal plus $100 U.S cash for a 40 minute presentation).

At one of the adjacent tables was an older couple and the sales-person stood up walked over to a wall and triumphantly rang a large, well-polished brass bell mounted there and all the other presenters stood up and started clapping and yahooing -- then the Champagne corks popped.

I just sat there and thought "only in America ...".

Seems I was wrong.

I'd think it has two purposes -- it makes it very difficult for the client to back out without embarrassment if they start having second thoughts and secondly as a motivational tool for the other sales persons.

Ugh !

Best,

Les D

In some bars in the US the staff ring a bell when they get a big tip. I presume this is intended to encourage further big tips...
