Well here is my first sketch using the Mellish technique.

NGC1291 ring galaxy in Eridanus.

I located it on monday night while looking for the Feb challenge objects. It was rather windy so didn't attempt any sketches.

Last night was nice and still so went for it and here is the result. I used a combination of the 26mm and 15mm EP.

With the 15mm I could see the central region was brighter than the outer edge. I couldn't really see a gap between the center and the outer ring although the sketch has ended up showing it.

I used the 26mm to look at the surrounding stars. As I wasn't confined to a predefined circle I move out and filled to the edge of the page.

The scan has come up a bit shiney, so will need to work on that.
EDIT: Change some settings, second scan attached.

C&C welcome.

Great sketch Michael! However, the 'ring' is outside that again. Your description pretty much fitted what I saw, maybe a bit more elongated than you have. The key is the little star on the edge - it sits on the edge of the dimmer part of the inner, brighter galaxy structure. Ie you see the bright central core, and then the dimmer region out to the little star - the ring (which I couldn't see) is further out again. If that makes sense!! :P

Very nice looking sketch indeed Michael. Looks like you've made very good use of Alex's article

Very nicely rendered, Michael.

When I squint it looks just like through a scope. Well done!

Magnificent sketch Michael!

I spotted 1291 on Saturday night in not the best of conditions. Your representation is so very much like the view through the eyepiece when you squint as Ken says! Only difference with my view was the outer ring appeared finer or thinner. Mind you, I was using my 17.5".

I wouldn't change or alter anything, mate. It is a beautiful representation! Congrats!

Thanks guys. Very satisfying to know that it looks like what you are all seeing. It also means I have the right object.

Thanks Rob. Makes perfect sense.

It's an excellent aticle, easy to follow and seems to work

I think I spent about $20 all up getting the materials. Couldn't find just white pastel so now I have a set of 12. I guess they will come in handy eventually.
