The Moon - 21st August, 2010

I was going through some old data and came across this. It was taken on August 21st, 2010, from Belanglo State Forest, where the Macarthur Astronomical Society gathered for the student night.

Presented is a full scale crop from 30% of the original source file. Very basic processing applied in Canon's Digital Photo Professional (RAW sharpening, contrast, shadows, and highlights). Not more than 30 seconds work.

I was really chuffed as I managed to get the ExtenderQ 1.6x to mate to the scope as well as to the camera, taking the FSQ from 530mm at f/5 to 800m at f/8. A remarkable imaging instrument. It was also one of the first few images I took with this dream telescope.

Looking good there H and nice to see you on the Solar System forum.
Love the full res version, very nice detail. Its always a struggle with the Moon insofar as finding a balance between over exposing the bright regions and not making the darker regions too dark. Reckon this is slightly over exposed, but then I suppose this can be rather subjective, never the less still a great image.

I agree. I think I can shave a 1/3rd of a stop off the exposure. I've just come back in to work for a bit. Once I get home, I'll re-uploaded a slightly less blown rendition.

He does look a bit over cooked to my eye.
I usually shoot Luna at 750th of a sec during this phase.
But you've got some wonderful sharp detail there. Lovely!
