That's nothing, have you seen Gerald Sargents' set up at astrofest?

He is the undisputed king of cables(tongue in cheek:P)

Paul

You are not even trying. I can see at least 4 sockets with no cables in them :)

Oh this is just to get the ball rolling. I'm sure there are some truly horrendous cablings out there in astrophotography land.

Just wait Brendan. I bought a new 10 port usb hub yesterday in anticipation LOL

Hi Paul,

I hear the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation is looking for talent and is now hiring.

My cables used to be a nightmare, but after numerous failed imaging runs due to balance shifts and cable stiffness, I tidied up. Big time. I love my cable loom now - it's utterly manageable and with the simple installation of a flat piece of aluminium installed between the two main scope's clamshell thumbscrews, I hide all the cables behind that and they can flex to whatever position they need without dislodging and killing my balance.

I have a DSLR and CCD camera running as well as the guide camera and heater controller cables all tucked away. Who said that a G-11 had to be messy? ;)

Great set up and approach 'Omaroo'

I too have my cables as neat and tidy as

possible,it save tripping over them or getting tangled up

in them.I cannot understand why people have such ugly

mess when it comes to cables, sure we need them, but some time

and thought of how we set them up can save many nightmares.

And unsightly mess.

Should throw some of those cable ties around your paragraphs to rope in all that wasted space between lines. :P

Ooooh... that's rather feminine Chris  how do you move it around?

Mine used to be a bit dodgy (dangerous?)...http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/66204409/original

Thats where velcro straps come into play. Do a great job and are cheap at bunnings. Also easy to dismantle at the end of the night and can be used to wrap up all your cables neatly before storage.

Some interesting images there.

Just a question,I have been meaning to ask for a very long time, some of these
imaging set ups I see,for example Leon's and other very high end mounts and gear,do not look balanced.

I have notice this to when some astronomers set up there gear here, they do not balance their tube/camera.etc.

Is it so,that when you have a really high end mount like a Tak or AP M1 and similar you do not have to worry about balance of tube/camera etc??

I notice that many papers and book etc,say it is very very important to balance tube/camera dew heaters, fine scope guider, otherwise there can be issue with mount not guiding quite as good as it should.

Also, does this cause any long term damage to mount,if not balanced correctly??,if these high end mounts do not have an issue being incorrectly balanced, tha'ts great news.

Chris

PS BTW,no images here of spaggethi come close to Gerald's gear.I'll get an image here of his cables,he will surly take first prize!;)

Chris,

How can you tell by looking at images of setups that they're balanced or not?

I'd say they're all balanced. Imagers would be crazy to not be balanced.

You guys are the most entertaining pack of cards!!

Hey Chris, do you have any problems with signal noise or interference with all those cables being so close together?

Baz.

leon
19-01-2011, 11:26 PM
Chris, they may look a bit off balance with all that stuff hanging off them, but be assured that the weight of a 50 cent piece, when all knobs are loose would set it off in a direction unknown.

These are a bit out of date but I still only run one power and 2 usb cables to the mount.
The home brew distro box on the mount handles dew heaters etc etc etc.

Almost too neat!
It looks like the mount is floating on a blue magic carpet somehow.

I got some photos of mine last night - quite happy with it now. The bulk of the cables are supported by the mount and wrap up ove the centre of the newt ota. Ive mounted my dew heater controller on the SBS bar between the two scopes to minimise the cables that dangle from the mount - now only the 12V power and the serial connection to the dew heater. Everything drops into a box below the mount where the USB and 12V power are located. 3xUSB cables to the lappy and one 240V power are the only cables coming out of the box from the scope.

Interesting setup Pete. I'm at a loss though as to what is the function of the cableless object in image four. I can only assume its isopropyl for cleaning the mirror. ;) Remember too much of that and you'll go blind ;) Cough couastrofestugh
