Hi all,

Here starts another year of chasing gaps in the clouds! :juggle: :cloudy:

Katoomba Airfield has been made available to us for Saturday 5'th of February. Thanks Rod!

For those who have not been here before, and would like to join us, access is via Medlow Bath. Turn into Railway Pde at the only traffic lights at Medlow Bath. Follow it to and turn into Rutland St (also called Grand Canyon Rd). From here the entrance to the Airfield is 4km, with the last 3km being an unsealed road. Just take it easy on this unsealed road as rain can erode channels into it.

On entering the Airfield, turn left and follow the track past the 'No Entry' sign, then turn right at the intersection and head up the slope. We set-up on the north-south runway on a concrete slab just to the left on getting to it.

Facilities are basic. Though there are loos, it is BYO everything else, and there is no power. If the night is particularly good, we are welcome to stay overnight in the office building. Carpeted floors and plenty of sofas to crash-out on.

Rod doesn't ask for a fee, but for a case of his preferred brew. To this, the cost of it is shared amungst the attendies. The more that attend, the cheaper it gets for all of us, .

Got a scope? Bring it! What ever its size, we ALL gain from every scope.

Only got binoculars? Great, bring it! You WILL be amazed at how good binos are.

Don't have a scope? Come along too! These get-togethers are a fantastic way to see all types and sizes of scopes. You can see first hand what each scope is capable of, how easy or complex they are to set up, and the accessories that are available.

If you've never been to a Star Party, torch light is the only light! BUT, it MUST be a red-light torch while the Party is in session. Red light causes the least amount of disturbance to dark adapted eyes. Covering the torch with two or three layers of red cellophane is perfect!

Bring a white-light torch too, but its use needs to be carefully considered so not to cause disturbance to everyone else.

I've included a few pics from one of our last sessions. The first is a look north, and where we set-up. The second is to the south. As you can see, parking is no problem. The third is of some of the scopes that where set-up that night - clouds had set in, so no-one was put off by the camera's flash! I wouldn't be writing this otherwise, , rather, lying somewhere in the scrub, pushing up daisies, :P .

Special note: mozzies are around, so if you do bring any type of personal insect repellant in the aerosole form, please, please, please, do not apply it anywhere near the scopes! Aerosoles and scopes DO NOT mix!

Ohm I would sooo love to come, but it's my parents' golden anniversary that weekend and I'm required to attend.

Have a clear night!

Cheers

Just bought a 12" dob today. Hopefully the weather will be good, so I can take it for a whirl under a dark sky :)

OH, BABY!!! :jump2:  :atom: :jump:

And what's happened to the 6"?

If there is someone who doesn't have a scope, and would like to experience one, I may be persuaded to bring my 8" dobbie along. Please let me know. No request, it stays home.

Steffen, pass on my congratulations to your folks! It is a marvelous milestone, .

Well, Ive still got the 6" packed up in boxes now. I was thinking of trading it in but the eq3-2 mount with motors is quite valuable and I probably wouldn't have got a decent deal. Besides, it is a perfect size for a 3-4 inch wide field refractor one day. :)

But, for the time being, aperture fever has taken hold. :D

Just found out that I can make the airfield however it doesn't look good. AG Hybrid has a new scope. I have a new eyepiece. Lets hope that the weather gods don't intervene and spoil our play date. So positive thoughts all round and hopefully we'll get us a dark sky. See you there.

Things are looking 50/50 weather wise at the moment. At this point, still ok for me, :screwy: . I've got a list, the scopes have been primed, eyepieces cleaned, thermos of coffee poised for action, and I'm chaffing at the bit, :screwy: :screwy: .

Still, if things go pear-shaped tomorrow with cloud thick enough to resemble Venus, you'll find me fishing Coogee Beach on the north end, ;) :fishing: . Hey, I've been allowed out of the house, I'm not going to let a little cloud stop me!

Like the man said "A man has got to have enthusiasms! Enthusiasms."

Hoping the weather is fine. Finally saw saturn with the 12' last night. What a great view. I upped the magnification as far as I can go for the hell of it. I think about 560x and the image didnt break down. I don't think the see was that great but for moments I could see I think was the cassini division. Which I think is alright considering I was looking through high atmosphere clouds.

Chomping at the bit for some dark sky action.

Hi all

great to meet those the were there last night. Sorry if I don't remember everyone's names :ashamed:

It was a great night for my first star party, and I'm hoping to do more in future. This time with a tracking mount so I can photograph those nebulae!

Speaking of which, Alex thanks a million for your help in pointing out things to shoot. I was just amazed at what the camera picked up :thanx::thanx:

Cheers

Only too happy to help out Adam, . Reckon you'd be able to post a couple of frames from last night? I too was most impressed at what your camera was able to pick up!

Just a shame about the bands of high cloud that kept rolling across the sky. Stopped me from being as productive as I hoped. Still, the moments of clarity in the sky were astounding! I managed to see the Rosette nebula for the first time! It is such a big, faint bugger.

I've added a pic from last night's session too. Dulwich Hill brought along his two kiddies too, armed with their own scope too.

As an added bonus, we even scored a great view of the International Space Station just on sunset, to see it disappear only when it entered Earth's shadow! So bright!

Many thanks again to Rod for allowing us onto his Airfield. Cheers, mate, .

Until next time,

Mental.

Hi,

Thanks Alex, I had a great night also. I found my ED100 could manage a bit more than I thought, and I had a good time combing through my list of doubles in Leo. It was a most impressive array of scopes there, which does not show up in this photo.

Any of you IIS colleagues out there within reach, do consider joining the next get-together at this spot, it is a great little outing.

Cheers

Would really like to come up one night. Getting there is no problem, it's such a long drive home when you've been up all night...

Deeno,
Rod the operator of the site has said that we may stay overnight in the airfield office. During winter he lights a slow combustion:campfire: heater for us so that when we get :cold:cold we can go inside and warm up a little before venturing out again.

The office is basic but a sleeping bag and pillow would make it more comfortable.

Last Saturday Mental4astro and myself left the airfield about 2:30 am. I was climbing into bed in the inner west of Sydney at 4 am..

Not:shrug: sure how long it'd take to drive to the Central Coast though.

Hi all

Here are a few pics from the night. Sorry the images are too hot, and sorry for lack of names. I'm a real noob and don't know all of the names yet. Also, because the exposures were single 2 second jobs without tracking, image quality isn't too hot, which I will rectify when I get a tracking mount :)

Cheers

Lovelly pics for 2 second unguided exposures. Thanks for posting them, .

The objects are:

1, Southern Cross region, with Sydney's glow reflecting of the low clouds.

2, Eta Carina nebula

3, Open cluster NGC 3532

4, M42 the Orion nebula, M43, and NGC 1977 the Running Man nebula

5, Globular cluster Omega Centauri

Like Geoff, I particularly like the first one!
