I have noticed that quite a few of regular iceinspace members from Queensland have not posted on the forums since the floods have started' Some have obviously been effected by the floods :(
Please keep them in your thoughts, and hope that they come through in good health when it is all over:thumbsup:

Hi,
Yes, seconded. Power cuts will affect many.
Cheers
Hi Ron,
Good to see your power must have been restored and you are back on line.
As announced today, Energex has been restoring power to more parts of S.E
Qld and as they do so, hopefully in time we will hear from more IIS members.
However, for those in affected areas, that may be quite a while whilst the
big cleanup begins.

The Optus network is down across much of the South East.
Got a phone call this morning (i have the kilcoy motels old phone number) from a distraught woman in Canada, trying to locate her partner who is staying with people in the Kilcoy area. She's seen the footage on the TV is hasn't been in contact with him since Monday. I went checking with the police and SES and they said they can't get in contact with a lot of out lying properties because there is no phone connection.
Yes, hopefully only power outages .... think I heard there were 110,000 houses without power in Brissy. :help:

All present and correct thanks.
Sad day - lots of people dead and many homeless.
I'm sure we'll get over it, but we're going to suffer a lot before this is over even if we haven't suffered already - those unlucky enough to have been in the path of this awful flood are going to be very badly off.
The SAS (Southern Astronomy Society) has a dark sky place at Leyburn up on the Darling Downs - it was flooded a metre deep and all the observatories (about 11 I think)have been badly damaged. A local farmer saved what he could, but there's some valuable stuff lost - RCs and Lx200's up in the 14" range. Generators, Mounts, all manner of stuff.
The Sydney Morning Herald has a story today about restoring the telecommunications
in flood areas.
Few would envy being the Telstra technician that encountered the five red belly
blacks in a cable pit. See first picture in story here -
http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/thousands-disconnected-as-floods-sink-telcos-20110113-19oz4.html
They also mention -
Apart from the hazards of encountering venomous snakes, with the amount of water damage that would have occurred to the copper cabling, the
reliability of many phone connections will undoubtedly be compromised for many months to come, long after services are restored,
as the moisture and dirt does its corrosive worse. It will certainly keep phone technicians busy for a very long time.

The thought behind this thread was a silent Wish/prayer for all the iceinspacers who might be badly effected by the flood, and have not been able to contact any of us to let us know they are safe:sadeyes:.

I'm pretty sure RobF lives in the western suburbs so I'm hoping he only has power issues.

Any idea if anyone can actually get out to Leyburn to see what has happened?? I'm guessing that the highways are cut through the Lockyer Valley towards Toowoomba, but you might get through via Beaudesert-Boonah-Cunningham highway. Photos?

I had some "Good News" today, that a friend who I was most concerned about Safe and Well:):):)
Cheers
Power was off 4.5 days here then I found the internet was dead for another day or so. We're lucky though. Devastation city further down my street. A few days of power nothing compared to the heartbreak the people down there have been through. Astronomy hasn't been no.1 on the list for the last 7 days must admit :(
Some streets still have ruined furnishings/walls/etc stacked higher than their ground floor lining the streets, awaiting the dump trucks. Army and police still had much of the suburb blocked off this morning to all but trucks/dozers. Sobering stuff.

More good news!
Heard from my other sister up near Bundaberg tonight (I also have a sister in Brisbane who is safe).
They were still living with flood damage near Bundy and she finally got her phone back on this afternoon, and rang to say they are fine.
Water came up to the floor level and no more.
I didn't think she was at any risk coz I didn't even know Bundy had a flood
But they are all well. :)
My thoughts are out there for anyone affected, and those still missing.
