Hello everyone. I picked up my first telescope (8 inch Dobsonian) on saturday from Bintel in Melbourne and the skies have not cleared since so i am hanging out for a clear night.

Hi Darryl,

:welcome: to the occult world of astronomy, :wink2: . A new 8" dob equals 8 weeks of cloud. Gee, they're gonna love you down there!!

Oh, and who here in Sydney bought a new 16"? :P

Congrats on the new scope!

Well - on that scale, someone in Brisbane took delivery of a 30-40 incher sometime early last year....:mad2:

Darryl - this has been one of the wettest years on record - so its almost a dead certainty that it it can only get better from here! So, Welcome - there's lots to learn - and what better time to do it than when it's p'ing down.

Hi Darryl.

Welcome to the start of the money pit

If you ever want to come and use your scope at a comfortable safe dark sky site, you are welcome to come up here and use our club site at Snake Valley.
We are only about 45 mins from Geelong.

I live on site so any time is cool :)

I live in Colac so I was wondering who had caused the clouds down this way!!:P:lol:
Congrats on the 8", its a fantastic scope to start off with and you will see heaps. Geelong has an astro club, here their website http://home.vicnet.net.au/~asog/

Snake valley is also fantastic, they are having a camp in March.

:hi: and :welcome: Darryl. I hope it clears soon for you, you won't regret getting an 8" Dob, they are a fantastic little scope.

Well I don't know about early last year but I could be held responsible for some, just some, of the past fortnights rainfall.:ashamed::whistle:
:o

Congrats Darryl!! 8" Dob was my first good scope, and had it for years, and saw a huge array of wonderful targets.

Alas, I think we have to blame the aussie $$ - I think 1000s of people along the eastern seaboard have bought a huge amount of astronomical gear. Its true!! I still have 4 EPs and a snazzy new finderscope that I have been unable to use.

Skies will clear though Darryl, enjoy. :D
