i think there was a mention of this work done by a man in the US (were else of course) in a recent US astronomy mag i remember reading a few months ago
a man who combined his love of astronomy with his day job of artist / carpenter

I can appreciate the work that has gone into building this scope and mount.
Not my cup of tea though.

This Guy really has a desire to be creative....different....yes, very much so.
But still nice work....You'd have to have a lot of patience....:D
Very impressive i like it, must have been a hell of a lot of work.

Normand is the guy that Orion enlisted to produce their Monster Dobs, if they ever get an order:lol:

I can appreciate the time & love put into it - I'd still rather have something that looks like a total piece of crap pulled out from the tip, with superb optics in it.

Gandalf's scope?

Not an expert, but i would guess with our climate and potential high humidities a wooden scope could suffer terrible Collimation issues

I was thinking exactly the same thing Stu.
You'd be checking collimation regularly through the night.
Ah, no, I dont think so. :eyepop:
I would be embarassed to go anywhere near it, not a pretty sight to me.

All your comments made me laugh because they`re all true.
Last summer I looked at a Normand Fullum telescope in my astronomy store and I`ve never been more confused in my life. One minute I was thinking it was a hideous eyesore, then the next, it was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I will tell you one thing though, it was smoooooth, and every part of it screamed, `quality.`
But I wouldn`t buy one because it looks like it`s part of a ship; it`s very masculine; and it`s over $2000.00 for a 6".
Normand Fullum is not American, he's from Quebec, Canada. I guess because I'm from Quebec too I understand what the look of the telescope is about. Quebec is all about trees and maple syrup. So why not make a maple syrup telescope? Don't you have a dingoscope?

So he builds a fabulous timber masterpiece, buys a fancy cable with gold plugs and then leaves the battery exposed in all its glory on the base?

That really is Kitch, personally I find it very ugly and feel its a waste of time.Yes I can certainly appreciate the amount of time and skill needed to build.
But why would anyone really bother,I think its the ugliest scope I've seen.
Of course!!!
My son and daughter in law live in Canada so we have a good supply!;)

Nice craftsmanship but this must weight a Ton!
Yeah, should have made it out of BALSA WOOD
Indeed, this scope is built by one of North America's best known scope builders,
Normand Fullum (http://www.normandfullumtelescope.com/home_en.html), who is based in Quebec, Canada.
Normand has picked up several prizes for his work over the years, including at Stellafane.
A little while back at Border Stargaze, Don Whiteman gave a presentation
on a trip to Stellafane which included some photos of some of Normand's work.
Normand is a customer of ours and this particular scope is a 16" F/4.5 made of a
variety of Rosewood from Laos known as Khampi. Built in 2007, this scope is fitted
with one of our Argo Navis Digital Telescope Computers. Normand hid the Az encoder
under a star and the Alt encoder under a meteor striking the Moon.
You can find some more image of this scope, courtesy of Normand, on our web site here -

More recently, Normand has been producing some very large aperture Dobs for Orion.

You can find some pictures of one of these large aperture Dobs that was showcased
in April last year at NEAF in this thread here -
