Probably not that bad actually. The owner tells me it has been in storage for 20 years. More pics added to the listing as well.

Looks like something from the 1940's or 50's. Its either an amateur long term project or a commercial instrument. The lack of a commercial focusser and the pier made to a specific lattitude suggest its an ATM project. The focuser looks like it has been nabbed from a very old brass refractor. Someones dream project that outlived them :)
It is certainly only of scrap metal value.

Looks like it would weigh a tonne.

Just had a look.
-No brand plate, no idea who made the optics.
-The secondary coating is non existent.
-Primary need coating and polishing, do to the many scratches(!)
-The mount is a rough home-shop make.
-The most valuable part would be the ~8" worm, but someone dragged the scope on it (1/2 tonne) in many angle. It's ruined. And there is no clutch-plate.
-DEC tangent arm is amateur in a bad way (y'know what I mean)

Totally useless for anything.

My 2c.

Mick.

owner says 180-200kg. The oTA end cover looks like a drum kit bit...

Rom,
the worm-wheel couldn't give a ssssugar, 100kg or 1/2 tonne or 1 tonne.
The thing was dragged on it and the soft bronze is busted,
shame because it is a proper hobbed worm-wheel!

So, the listing is "not as described?"

"This is a great old telescope of premium quality. - really??? not according to Mick...

The high quality objective lenses deliver sharp images of the Moon, the planets Jupiter and Saturn, and much more. - really??? with no coating on the secondary?

It's positioned on a very heavy and solid mount that moves easily in all directions for fast and easy manoeuvring. - does it come with a supply of WD-40?

Zoom in on Saturn's rings, the Moon's craters, the International Space Station, comets, asteroids and much, much " - WOW all that with no coating on the secondary! And a "brass lens"? Never tried to look through a "brass" lens before. What the transparency of a "brass" lens anyway?

This seller is obviously has no idea what he is selling, and needs to be (a) advised of his deceptive listing description, however unintentional it is, and (b) at the very worst case, reported to eBay. Idiots like this should not be tolerated on eBay.

"This seller is obviously has no idea what he is selling..."

Yep, and I did what I could to highlight all those issues with him.
He is a honest bloke, just not into anything like these.
Not sure if he's going to update the add.

You could make a letterbox out of it.

Now that would be a conversation piece.

I agree Steve.
Like I mentioned, the bloke is honest.
Baying something like this without checking, testing is a gamble.
I had the opportunity to have a look, and I reported back what I saw.

I think it has tons of character, shame I didn't know about this earlier, would have offered to take it off his hands for nothing... Lots of stuff wrong with it, sure, but boy it would make a great project.

Wondering if the mount has been made to lat 34° 50'S ?

More than likely.

Steve,

As Mick has confirmed the scope's optics is obviously not functioning, so why has he stated "The high quality objective lenses deliver sharp images of the Moon, the planets Jupiter and Saturn, and much more." How does the seller know this, given that the optical chain obviously does not function according to Mick's assessment? As I stated, the seller may have had all good intentions but to blatantly state this is false and brings down the reputation and perception of honest eBayers. I stand by my comments, but in the end he'll get his money. But I have reported him to eBay as per listing violations.

torana68

never had a lot of luck with that... Ebay is most probably burried in similar complaints, but I also advised him his claims where not achievable but especially so when you can't verify it. Its one of those things where Im not at all impressed if someone who knows little ends up with "garden art" but if its an ATM who buys it best of luck :) but an honest apprasial is the way to go not what looks like cut and paste from other adds, he's been nudged but chooses not to post any corrections. To me this is not being "honest" . Id look at it if it were here :D but then Im silly like that. Either way its not a sheep station so im not going to get overly stressed about it :D if someone wants to buy it for me and deliver it that would be nice:thumbsup:

The term 'Lens' is commonly used by non-astronomical folk.
It is what they call the Eyepiece.

Back when this scope was made many EP's were made of brass.
Before this time all EP's were brass.

That's what he means. It has a Brass EP that has been stored away.

As an antique EP, or collectable EP (if it is in good nick) it will be worth $500 on its own with a FREE old telescope and mount thrown in

P.S. 18 minutes to go

AstroFlyer
10-01-2011, 04:30 PM
Judging by eye- witness report & pics of the item I doubt the EP will be in a good nick...
Looks like high bidder is a new ebay user - feedback of 6.
Good luck to him.

ballaratdragons

If it has been stored safely it would be hard to know.

7 minutes to go, 22 bids and still at $540

I hope you are right for the sake of the high bidder.
I guess if it's 200-300mm lens in a top condition it would be a bargain...

$797 ?????? :screwy:

The only way this is a fair price if the optics is a hidden gem,
like a prof. 8" f15 Classical Cass. Somehow, I don't think so.

Brass lens?? What lens?
It was a 45deg. prism. The brass part was painted over...

Someone going to get very upset me think.
Or he/she going to join the IIS for help.... :)

Mick.
