A graphic example of why you shouldn't point an unfiltered scope at the sun...

good reminder for golden rule number 1 - never ever look at the sun without proper protection (solar filter)

That's cool!! Just lucky I didn't have a magnifying glass that big when I was a boy. I would have vapourised those ants...:rolleyes:

Me too, until the day I was messing about burning holes in paper in dad's new car. Leaving the paper on the seat wasn't a good idea I discovered.

Never saw that magnifying glass again.......
(I'm probably lucky to still be alive)

This thing was on telly a few weeks back. I SO want one (recent 'landscaping has unearthed many, many rocks). I couldn't believe the bloke was waving his hands around like that either. Frenchmen....tch! :)

All I got at that link was an advert asking me to subscribe before going any further. Couldn't see any way around it, other than subscribing.

Hi Albert;

This is do-able .. gold reflects infrared radiation strongly.
According to Wiki, a single gram can be beaten into a sheet of about 1 square meter.
Handling it might be a problem though, and you still need to glue it onto something parabolic, (or similar), in shape.

Cheers

wonder if gold leaf is workable for this application. Plenty in the art industry
