Inspired by Ross' photos I started doing exposures on the barnard loop in Ha last Saturday. My first with a 18-35 Pentax lens. Still new to this lens business so bear with me on this one. I didn't realise how wide the field was and I took a good hour of my house roof until it cleared completey and I started picking up what I believe might be the rosette nebula at the bottom. Well half of it. :P

Seems I got the focus right. Beginner's luck? Did it on Jupiter with a mini-bathinov mask bought right here on IIS from a member. Works real good.

So this is 10x900s. Guided through the ED80 and piggy backed on my G11. Bit of dew on the lens on the last subs and still very noisy. Warmish night but I reckon with a bit more practice and data I should make something out of it.

Big one here (http://memkxw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pPuFpORgeMI1aDb81srPxNe2SilDOGRya Cs44TdYsfv5gGyoNsRdYJoy3vVIu2eV6trO DafK-CkyNMh0_EiRmip-F0L_6GKt7/BarnardLoop_ha_lf.jpg?psid=1). (800kb - had to crop the roof off so this is probably 75% of original frame)

Thanks for looking.

Nailed it Marc!

I'd like to start doing this a bit myself. Have to look into one of those mini masks!

Thanks Darren. Yeah it seems to work. Now I just have to find the sweet spot to get a flatter field.

Thanks mate. On axis is alright so I reckon if I zoom it a bit more and increase the image scale it'll look better. Then I just have to mosaic.

Thanks guys - glad you liked it.

Like it a lot Marc. The only improvement that could be made I think is more exposure.

Cheers

Thank you very much Steve. Yeah. more data would definitely be a plus. Will revisit for sure. :)

You can see the Barnard Loop in Ha, thats good. The Skydrive thing you got going there for your pics is also good, very good, nice work, havent seen that before.

Impressive Marc. 2.5hrs data @ a fast focal ratio, I was perhaps expecting more detail to be extracted out of the starry background. Huge FOV however which makes it an awe inspiring scene. Well done.

Very nice Marc, you make it sound like it was an experiment and if so it worked very well. The loop is probably one of the better versions I have seen.
Well done.

Thanks Fred. Yeah Skydrive is free and no brainer. Easy to use.

Thanks Jase. This is a central crop of the full frame which shows part of my house roof and street lights. Messy with massive gradient across the shot as well and I didn't calibrate as I haven't figured out how to shoot flats with that lens yet. New things to learn. But you're right in saying that when done properly I should get a lot more signal for this integration time.

Thanks for the comment Leon.

Thanks Doug. The center turned out ok with focus. I hope I can reproduce it consistently now . :)

Hi Marc,

Great shot! You have managed to really highlight Barnards Loop.

15min exposures is pretty good. Is your Ha filter 7nm or 12nm?

The field curvature is due to the zoom lens. I don't think zooming in will help. Stopping down might, but then you will lose exposure.
The best solution is go on ebay and get a 2nd hand Pentax wide angle or standard fixed focal length lens. You will get better quality and greater exposure.

Is that the Crab Nebula in the bottom left?

Good luck, it's clear again tonight!

Take care.

Ross.

Yep there are now :P

Seriously, this is great Marc love the scene, can you do the whole RGB thingy..?

In the very old old days (early 80's) of B&W film, to get this would have been a real triumph

Thanks Dave.

Thanks Ross. Baader Ha 7nm. Will have to try different settings.

Thanks Paul. Yeah trying a bit of widefield.

Thanks Mike. I'm not up to the RGB thing yet. I'm pretty sure the stars would bloat without the Ha filter on.

Thank you very much Rob. Wish I could take the credit. I didn't do it. It's a windows live template. I do websites for a living and I don't even have one of my own... :P Few M8s in there hey? Practice makes perfect.

Thanks Marco. I haven't imaged since that shot. The only color I've seen to date is gray :P
