Come and join the Astronomical Society of South Australia

As the new vice president of the Astronomical Society of South Australia I ask members of this site that are not members of the society to consider membership.

Our society is one of the oldest in Australia and currently has 550 members. However we are always looking for more people who enjoy astronomy.

The society offers a range of services and caters for all levels of interest and knowledge.

There are lots of advantages of being a member but the best I reckon is being able to meet people face to face and just talk astronomy. This happens in a number of ways. The society holds monthly meetings, members nights at our viewing facilities, telescope clinics and public viewing nights.

There are even advantages for remote members.

Firstly contragulations on the election result !

Secondly, how much did the bribes you had to pay to 275-odd people to like you cost ?? ;) ;) ;) (I see you've been selling a bit of gear lately, did it cost THAT much !!)

More seriously, well done for promoting your society and astronomcal societies generally. What we have here on IIS and the several other forums in Australia and worldwide is a great and brilliant thing, but being a member of a good society and supporting its work has always, and will always be better! Even better still is to be a part of both!

Here's hoping the ASSA and all the astronomical societies of Australia go from strength to strength.

I am going to join at some stage. Im a total beginner so have been to scared to go until now! I was hoping I could join up at the viewing night?

I got all excited about the last Heights public viewing night last month but it got cancelled. Then I decided to go to the Stockport public night and it was cloudy. I was planning on going to the Heights night on friday but Im thinking it will be cancelled again!

Nah didn't cost a cent. No one wanted the job. Go figure. :shrug: Not selling anything but buying heaps though. Maybe they think there is a gift in it for them. ;)




Viewing nights are a little difficult to join up at Carey. However don't be put off because you can still go to them. If you have access to electronic funds transfer through your bank you can now join up over the net. Or you could go to a monthly meeting and join up there. Nothing is too hard.:)

Don't be scared about being a total beginner; we all started in the same place. ASSA offers classes which cater for new people in astronomy right before the main lecture at monthly meetings. I thoroughly encourage you to attend these. The lectures are good and very informative. The next one will be in February on the date listed at the website.
