View Full Version here: : NGC 1316 - The smoke screen galaxy (with core detail)

Here I reprocessed my recent image of galaxy NGC 1316 in Fornax.

I reoriented the galaxy (I think it looks better this way?) removed the colour noise from the faint halo and using layer blending set out to reveal the very faintest outer halo details. The halo is a wonderful complex mix of subtle shell structures that extends quite a way out from the two interacting galaxies.

Those without harsh contrasty screens should see an extensive billowing subtly structured halo

The image is about 80% of full res and sized so when viewed at 100% will fit nicely on a 22" screen in full screen mode (F11)

ED: Here is a look deep in the core of NGC 1316 (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/130940502/original) and compared to Hubble :D

Lovely Mike. The core and outer arms are so subtle it would be very easy to botch the processing of this up. I am glad it isn't my image as it would be a wipeout I am sure.
Great work.

Mike - another ripper from you.
Cant wait until your new scope arrives.
Envious.......Hmmm, might have to do something about that.

Cheers for the comments guys, glad it was of interest.

The seeing was very ordinary on both nights for capturing this data so many faint stars, background galaxies and other details have been smeared or lost, I can only imagine what this Starfire would do in consistently good seeing

Yeh Guy, I hope the AG12 knows what it's up against :eyepop:...getting more faint details faster will be great though (fingers crossed)

Hey Allan, what you got in mind? ;)

Thanks again guys.

Fabulous!!!!

Colour is pleasing, detail is amazing, framing is superb, stunning!
Another amazing image.
Well done Mike.

And as usual, look at all those extremely distant Galaxies off in the background :)

(send the $50 to my P.O. box please Mike)

So did you like it, or not Ken

Man, $50 is for just saying "nice" ...I'll need to discuss a payment plan for this :eyepop:

Just think, many moons ago when David Malin relased the book "Colours if the Stars", that was the only place I could see images of faint stellar halos around galaxies, now it is done not with a huge schmidt camera but with a rig that is car portable.

Well done in showing us stuff that not that long ago was only found in plates from big observatories.

Cheers Dave and Big A

It is the little unexpected back ground galaxies that I like finding an odd one amongst, like in that now notorious deep Cen A field (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/109497819/original)- there are bleedin heaps!

Hi Mike, some great detail you've captured there, and I really like the Hubble comparison. This galaxy seems to have a structure very similar to Centaurus A with the overlaying dust band, very interesting!. Thanks for posting this :)

I agree Rolf deffinitely some Cen A similarities there.

The HST comparison helps reveal the fine details.

Hi Marc, yeh it is the most unusual galaxy I have imaged that's for sure. The core reminds me of Cen A a bit...ah yes, that reminds me, have I shown you this image I did once.....

Thanks Jase

Such deep work from such a small aperture. Always interesting viewing you images Mike. Great admirer of you work and I often site your images when defending the accuracy of Takahashi mounts. Once again you have done justice to another object.

Hey Mike, nice close up crop from your last imaging foray.. showing some good structure.
I've never been a fan of Elliptical galaxies, well, due to their lack of dust and structure, but this is one for the exception.

Here's a bit of a write up which I think is quite interesting about this object.

Nice to hear you got a couple of clear ones...
I'm hoping this beautiful day I'm having here will last the through the night:prey:

Look forward to your up and coming new image.

All the best
Rich
