View Full Version here: : Is there a sports car with a boot?

I'm looking for a 2 seater sports car with a boot to carry stuff.

The Toyota MR2 mid engined ultra reliable sports car looks the goods but has zero boot space. The BMW Z3, Audi TT are other contenders but I can't look inside those on line as yet to see carry space.

Anyone have any other ideas. 2002 and newer please.

VW Golf GTI or Golf R :-) (I know not really a 2 seater but it's a hatch!)

If your willing to go four door would recommend the impreza wrx STi in a heartbeat!

Going to be difficult to find a coupe with bootspace.

The BMW Z4, Alfa Spyder, Jag XK and Merceds SLK are the only ones that spring to mind. The latter are more GT than sports cars but if you're planning to transport a scope I would STRONGLY suggest a car with a bit of 'give' in the suspension.
Porsche 911 C4 + 8"Newt + 200km trip = Collimation woes forever! :D

We have both '02 and 2010 Mazda MX5's, the boot space is what is to be expected from a 'Sports car', carefully packed soft luggage will keep you away from home for a week, there is little room for "stuff" in the cabin but unlike a lot of convertibles on the market today the roof does not intrude into the boot space. Go and try a few on and remember that the specs that manufacturers provide on boot space are air volume and not practical space.

Good Luck.
Greg.

Really, I just can't help myself.

This one will take any scope...

I like the monster truck but filling it with nitro might be a problem :)

Don't want to put scopes in this, it's not for me. I forgot mazda made a 2 seater, I'll go have a look, cheers ...

Robin, I think you need to define what 'stuff' is.

911, Spider, GTV all have a small boot space. The GTV even has a small luggage space that has two seats in it that are just big enough to put your wallet or handbag on, though not at the same time.

Cheers,
Jason.

Robin,
If you do lean towards an MX5, drive a few because even a rubbish example will feel better than anything else that you have driven for a while.. if you need any advice feel free to PM me.
Cheers.
Greg.

If scope space isn't an issue - why bother with a boot, man!
Sports cars are for quick thrashes in the country with one's mistress and perhaps a change of knickers if one overnights at a discrete hotel.
If it won't fit in the glove-box, its superfluous to requirements.
The road, the day, the drive, are all that matter!

I did some googling for you and what I found was that the largest trunks (boot to us) in sports cars are:

Mazda MX5 Miata
BMW Z3 and Z4
Honda S2000

Porsche Boxsters have the most carrying capacity of all sports cars with their front and rear boots.

All these cars will carry a large set of golf clubs, Bag and buggy.
The Porsche Boxter can carry all that and a weeks worth of luggage.

Hope that helps

Get a HOT Hatch !! Ford Focus RS, Suzuki Swift RS with the go fast stripe, VW Golf GTI or R32,.
Sack it down on some big rims and low profile tyres. Switch in some Bilsteins and Brembos on ceramic pads and add a six point harness and roll cage for effect.
Yee haa !!!!

Actually the little Suzuki Swift RS is an awesome little quick car to drive. Had one for a week while the Legnum VR4 had some panel work done after I clipped a Porsche. Suzuki was cheap to run, fast and good fun round corners. Very stable and safe I thought for a FWD hatch.

Hot hatches are fast yes, but they don't have the driving pleasure of a sports car.

And no, a Commode or a FoulCan can NEVER be a sports car, no matter how many bits and pieces get bolted to it!

Cheers,
Jason.

Cheers guys, it looks like the mx5 will suit her. There are lots of them about, some with quite low km's and even a few with a turbo.

Did you say Turbo

How about my classic sports car take one 1964 EH Holden and swap the motor with one out of a Turbo Toyota Supra, old school look with modern power and good investment as the old cars are only going up in price, and more boot room then you will ever need.

Hmm, an EH. A lovely car for sure, but almost as far from being a sports car as a Unimog!Cheers,Jason.

I take it you haven't driven a Subaru WRX STI or a Mitsubishi Evo then? They will run rings around 99% of cars out there (excluding your expensive european supercars).

But they still have roofs! :)

Self explanatory really.
Greg.

I realise that the hairy-chested among you will be scoffing and tutting and heading straight for this column on the internet so you can speak your mind. You will say “girl’s car” and “gay” and all sorts of other things. Well, that’s fine. You waste your money on a Mustang or a Ferrari.
The fact is that if you want a sports car, the MX5 is perfect. Nothing on the road will give you better value. Nothing will give you so much fun. The only reason I’m giving it five stars is because I can’t give it 14.

I must agree. I'd have more fun in a A/H Sprite, S2000, MX5, Z3/4 or TR6 than a Subaru - even though the latter will most definitely run rings around some of the former, unquestioned. The point to a "sports" car is driving something by the seat of your pants with the lid off. It doesn't really need to be fast. It just needs to handle well and make all the right noises - including that of the wind! Anything with a roof may be a "fast" car, but is not a "sports" car. :)

Here's one you drive by the seat of your pants, makes lots of noises, you feel the wind and will handle anything you throw at it. It has more storage space than most sports cars and is very good in traffic or claiming that last parking spot at the shopping mall. The only downside I can see is needing to be able to tie a truckies hitch to close the bonnet.

... no boot though.

Let's re-phrase a little here... LOL.

"Handle": go immediately where you intend to point it and not complain with any undue roll centre reaction or screeching of tyres or brakes when asked to stop.

40-series don't do that - I know - I've had plenty.

You're getting caught up on minutiae Chris - if it's good enough for Lara it's good enough for any girl :)

I had a HJ47 troopie for 25 years. Magnificent vehicle - but what are these 'brakes' of which you speak???

BTW "had plenty" ???? It sounds as if you broke them. How? The only reason mine died was excessive oxidation. If I lived inland it would still be going strong.

"Competition"... spring-overs, running 38s up tree trunks, large boulders, severe rock steps and walls. All good fun but too expensive to continue past my "couldn't care about the money" period. :)

AAahh ! now you're talking, RALLY !! Done a few laps on the gravel in a few Evo's and your pants are strapped into that seat real hard with a six point harness!! There's only about 6" between your a-cheeks and the hard stuff with two sheets of tin and a bit of foam to protect it.

We've got two 2000 Mitsi VR4's which is the EVO big brother, V6, twin turbo, 4wd, AYC all the good bits in a family saloon. But thirsty ..... and petrol has just gone up ... again !! :mad2: Liz has the saloon, I got the Legnum Wagon.
Also got an '88 Mirage Turbo sitting in the garage awaiting certification so it can go trackside.
And the young fella (18) has got a '92 Mivec Mirage which isn't too slow either.

MX5. Friend of ours was the local club president until recently. The later 1800 versions are better, don't know about the turbo models. Light and reasonably powered. They do well being quite simple and light although the mechanicals on the early ones were a bit frail. Wheel bearings, suspension mounts/bushes. Rear wheel drive makes them entertaining to drive, especially in the wet as there is no traction control. Some had LSD's fitted which improved matters. Easy to work on though.

Try an Australian made supercar - Bolwell

I recently used to own a mk7 1969 coupe, but they recently made a 2009 edition after 30 years of making truck fiberglass canopy's, and not cars. If i had the money I'd buy one, for the aussie iconic value alone. The 1969 version was 10.3 on the quarter mile, not sure on the current day version specs, but it's definiately be worth a look.

Thanks for all the input people.

She found one of these in the price range. slk200 supercharged 2litre 7speed auto.
Over 150thou on the clock is too many for me but the roof does do a dance into the boot :)

[edit]
I believe they also make a 5.5litre version which would be like jamming my statesman's V8 into a skateboard :D
