Wha tha??? Now don't you go fainting on me!
Yep finally got to complete this image too and I was really looking forward to finishing this one . The data was pretty good although the seeing was very average so lots of work on getting the detail out of the very subtle galaxies particularly the subtle billowing streamer and shell galaxy NGC 1316.
Love this galaxy actually it is rather similar to some of the tidal mess galaxies posted recently, you can make out several shells in the deffuse halo, a bit like in Centaurus A..?

And for those that would like to have a swim around the entire 1.6deg X 1.6deg full frame (2.3meg at 50% res) Look Here (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/130688884/original)
Yes, I know, a little bit of field rotation visible top right in the close up crop but I hope it doesn't detract from the overall vista of this strange but magnificent galaxy interaction

This is really nicely done. You're on a roll. The details and faint extensions are well defined on the main subject. Very cool.

On first impression its whoa! that's fabulous. Then my attention got caught on some greenish gradient to the last 1/4right side of the image. The left side seems to have a slight bluish cast unless there is reflection neb there.
It may be my monitor which is a bit harsher than the cup of tea damaged other lappie with the Ubeaut screen I normally use.
That is a really odd looking eye shaped galaxy to the left as well. Very nicely framed catching all these galaxies. You also got a lot of detail in the dust lanes which is nice.

I have scrutinised the full frame image in Photoshop and on my moniter I think I can see what you are refering too but it is so hard to see that I can't really do anything about it  Uneveness is visible when I crank the saturation way up so perhaps on a harsher more contrasty moniter it is a little more obvious? Is it it very obvious on your moniter or only noticable when you look carefully? From this end the sky looks pretty flat across the frame, not peeeerfect but good enough :P
..?...Oh god :eyepop: if you notice it, heck, Jase is sure to point staight at it, I'm doooomed :scared:
Yeh, back to the subject matter, its a cool looking grouping huh? ...and reference to your CDK shot some weeks back, do you see there is no arc/arm on the darker side of NGC 1316 either?

No its not that bad at all and I wasn't going to comment about it as I know my monitor is a bit harsh with that sort of thing.
How's about we forget I mentioned it - hey - wow nice image!

Nah that's ok mate, good to hear these things, my shots often have residule imperfections in them - usually from fear of losing faint details or for fear of imparting the wrong look :P...we often miss things quite inocently...plus you know how it is, we find it hard to see the flaws in our own children

Yeh on a roll........I miss the Sidonio's already

Looks good enough to me..... I have super saturated a copy any any variation is in acceptable limits, it doesn't show any processing artifacts, nicely composed..... And more fresh data......

Oooooooooo - good one Mike!!:thumbsup: Crisp star colour, nice detail and no excessive blue halos or sky cast either. Nice image to browse around. Can't see any gradients on my monitor.
Really nice mate!

Once again very impressive Mike. A slight bit of colour noise in the background but nothing too obtrusive.

Hello Mark,
It's first time, I see this object, impossible to see in northern hemisphere;
It's beautiful with great details;
there are many little galaxies in the background.

You never fail to amaze me mate. This is a great shot. Heaps of detail in all the galaxies present. Well done. Nice streams too.

Cheers guys, thanks for the comments.
This might be a good one to do again with the bigger faster AG12 that's on its way, I am sure there is more stuff deep in there.
Just getting out was rewarding enough but to collect enough data to have two images viewable was a bonus :) (can only imagine what it would be like to have a permanent setup again :().
I'm looking forward to getting the colour for the horsehead, I'm sure it will be a processing challenge
Thanks again

That's a wonderful image Mike, I love these deep galaxy fields you produce. There are certainly some interesting looking galaxies there. And great details and smooth processing all around as usual. Thanks for sharing this.
I can only imagine what you new 12" will be able to capture:eyepop:

Thanks Rollo
Well, if it isn't too temperamental (preparing for the worst )...Yes, I am looking forward to the greater light grasp and speed for sure but the Starfire will take some beating for resolution.

Nicely done Mike! Don`t recall looking at pics of this before. Like mentioned interesting variety of galaxies in the FOV and nice details showing..
Can`t see a gradient this end also..
When is your bigboy coming? I bet not soon enough!

Had a very nice swim through the 50% res version thanks Mike.. Man this is one mega chip:rolleyes:
Certainly picked up the extended halo nicely on 1316... with some fine structure coming through.
Love the two little blue, spirals down to the lower L/H corner, looks as though they are doing some interacting ?.
Nice saturated star colours.
I noticed a bit of a yellowish gradient to the R/h side, probably more dominant to the upper R/H corner..
Clean this up and reduce a bit of the colour speckle noise and she'll be perfecto oh maestro..
How far off's the new scope ??
All the best for now

Hi Mike
a very nice field indeed, but the halo around NGC 1316 has a good deal of colour noise to it - but that is a very faint halo, and 30 minutes exposure in RGB is probably insufficient.
Otherwise, a very nice image.
cheers

Hi Gary
Cheers mate, glad you saw something new here
The AG12 may be here before Christmas...but I'm patient.
Thanks Rich, yes an interesting field, guess that's why I framed it that way :P. I like the two interacting galaxies also but the distant face on spiral closer to the top of the image is my fav.
Seems the colour noise (and gradient) is more noticable to some than others, I can see it but at a sitting distance from the screen it is all but invisible on my screen. I sometimes go easy on things like this so as not to exhange one "issue" with another, namely obviously processed/smoothed look or colour loss etc. The colour speckle blends into a hue at a sitting distance.
Buuuut, given I am the champion of repros...I bet I have a crack at it though
Thanks again mate

Thanks for the comment martin  :rockband: :D
Seriously though...You are quite right regarding the short amount of colour data, especially for such a faint feature. I was hastily trying to avoid the moon and lost a few subs to sattelite trails...including one right through the middle of 1316, I get out so infrequently I am often forced to make the best of it  :mad2:.
Also see my comments above to Richardo :)
Thanks for looking, now don't be a stranger ;)

Love your work Mike, lovely image - so when will you move up to a cooled dslr :)
gregbradley
30-11-2010, 12:44 PM
Yeah MIke, how's about a cooled 40D for the AG12?
Actually I have a 40D for terrestial and love it.

You're a funny guy Mike....I really did get a laugh out of your string of wingding smilies.
Of course, in CS5, you can now utilise the "content aware" healing brush. You click on the start of the satellite trail, hold down shift, then press on the end of the satellite trail (having adjusted the width of the brush to encompass the trail), and CS5 will then completely replace the satellite trail wth the background pixels...regardless of how they change along the length of the satellite trail. The purpose of holding down shift, is so that the tool draws a complete straight line, as satellite trails tend to be.

Oh, Yeh I'm funny allright ;)..?... just not that many people laugh
Now that would be a very useful tool, do you use it on the raw sub before calibration?
CS5 huuuuh.....? Hmmm? where to get a copy

No, either use it on your masters before combining (although, they are probably still 32-bit FITS at that stage), or just do it once you have your RGB or LRGB TIFF.
You cant get a copy of CS5 - You have to upgrade from CS4!
Cheers
Martin
