Hi everyone,
After seeing 'Magnificent Desolation' (8 times, so far..) I've been trying to see Hadley Rille through my scopes.

I know exactly where it is but even at high magnification, I still can't convince myself I've seen it. (Though the seeing hasn't been all that good, when I've looked).

I'm using both a 90mm F11 refractor & an 8" F6 reflector.

Has anyone seen the Rille? Is it only visible when the Moon's in a certain phase?

Thanks.

best wishes,
Ian

Hi Ian, I'm not familiar with this area myself (though now I think I will have to have a look!). Google dug up a report from a guy who observed Hadley Rille and surrounds with a 5 inch refractor. Anyway, here is the link:

Good luck!

And some more observing reports - unfortunately not giving telescope aperture but amateur observers nonetheless.

Yes you can easily observe Hadley Rille especially when it is near the dark limb. I have posted two images that have Hadley Rille in them. Sorry I cant remember what liberation or phase the Moon was at when they were taken.

Thanks everyone,

great advice. Much better armed now, I shall track this Rille down.

The youngest moon rock brought back to Earth was found at Hadley Rille, only 3 billion years old...so it existed up there, just as single cell organisms were beginning to develop on Earth.......the Moon's a pretty wild place when you think of it.

Thanks again,
cheers
Ian

I have the Terminator at the Apollo 15 site at 2006 Jan 21 1709UT but mountain shadows will cover it up before this. So check for the rille several days prior to the given date.Ed

Errr umm excuse my dubness but what part of the images is the rille? I got no idea what I am looking at. Not a great moon watcher, prefer deeper sky.

Found an exceptional image of Hadley Rille by Wes Higgins.

So the rille is the squiggly line then?

Yes the rille is the squiggly line in the images. This is an interesting feature on the Moon as it is a collapsed lava tube. We have lava tubes here on Earth located in many places, Far North Qld and Western Victoria are the best Aussie ones.

I observed the rille through a Zeiss 6" coude refractor once and that was from light polluted Brisbane. I apologise that I can't recall the Moon's phase or libration at the time.
