Hi all! Fantastic Aussie site - kudos to all involved. I am a complete newbie, having received a C130 GT from my darling wife for Xmas - mind you, I had thrown out some hints :) My normal optical viewing is of a different sort - I spend my days exploring areas where the sun definitely doesn't shine with high resolution scopes - of the endoscope and colonoscope type

I hope you will be patient with me as I learn my way around the skies and scopes. I have not yet developed any specific astronomical areas of interest - but I will be getting into photography. Nice to meet you all

Don

Welcome Don...you picked the right time of the month to introduce yourself with virtualy a full moon tonight.

Welcome.

Welcome Don.

With a name like "Moonshine", you will not be popular in the Deep Sky section, where the light of our Moon is seen as a curse, rather than the object of beauty adored by Lunar imagers!

Cheers

Dennis

Hi moonshine, welcome to IIS. It's fun, well more than looking in dark crevasses with illuminated point things (not that I'd know):P

With an occupation like yours, perhaps you could just go by the name of "Moon"? :P

I don't think one could stop learning about the night sky and telescopes, there will always be something new for all of us.
Welcome aboard to IIS Don, and enjoy your stay here.

Welcome Don!

Astronomy can keep you up very late and make one tired at work the next day, which a funny thought comes to mind!!!:

Scene: Don very tired at work after an all nighter viewing the heavens. Don probes into a patients 'dark & nasty hole', places his eye to the other end of the endoscope and says "I can't see Jupiter".

     :wink2:

thats what they all say!! Welcome aboard and prepare your wallet!!, you will need it when you start to get more and more hooked. Actually this is worse than drugs, the only cure in more astronomy!!

PS: at least you know a little about optics!!! you should be able to resolve some detail that we might miss ;)

Welcome Don
You will find a great bunch of people to observe with there on the Sunshine Coast.
I presume your C130 GT is a ... Celestron 130mm scope of some sort?

 It could be the latest colonoscope :confuse3:

:welcome: Don to the craziest place on the net..... :family2:

Welcome Don, how did you hear about us?

The jokes are flying thick and fast in this thread :)

I heard about you through one of the two Australian astronomy magazines - I don't have them with me at the moment so I am not certain which one.

And gaa_ian, you are correct. The scope is not a colonoscope (too small an aperture - take that any way you like :) ) - it is a Celestron 130 mm mak reflector on a CG5 equatorial mount with goto function. It is a new model I understand. Nothing flash, but hopefully good enough to teach me the basics before I splash out. I also have the Celestron eyepiece and filter kit.

I'll put up a review in the review section when I get to play a little more with it.

Welcome Moonshine - I'm sure you're gonna have some great times with your new scope. A very thoughtful pressie from your wife! She must've done her homework then, since she got you a nice rig to start with.

Enjoy your surfing (here & up there)....

:gday:

Mike,
They joke around because deep down they are very nervous of Don's profession. ;)
Am I right or am I right?

Welcome moonshine!! Your wife may regret getting you that scope cause this hobby can be a very addictive, if you dont spend most of the night out observing you will probably be on IIS forum were there is endless info, reading, and entertainment. im sure you will enjoy your new hobby!!!! ;)

Welcome Moonshine.

Keep your eye on the Star Party and Observing Sessions Forum. We usually have a nights observing out near Kenilworth (Astroron's at Cambroon) every weekend closest to the new moon (Probably not this coming new moon as Astroron will be at the IISAC)
