Hiya all, Just thought I'd let you know that I'm now on Broadband. Ditched the dreaded d/u this morning.
Question tho! If I'm supposed to be on a 512/128 plan, & paying for that plan, then why do I only run, (d/l), @ 100k???????
It is quicker, but I expected mucH, muCH, mUCH, MUCH quicker.
Very confused. :confuse3: :D L.

check the small prinit, you will very rarely get 512k down. It is better than d/u, but it could be so much better!!!
i have 1.5mbyte at work and it fast, very fast, but at home, some 2km down the road, it feels half the speed and it is also a 1.5mbyte speed????

You should only be able to download at around 55-56kB\sec max on your new connection. Im not sure where the 100k is coming from.
Typical download speeds in kiloBytes per second for the three main ADSL speeds are:
256/64: 25-27 (upstream: 6-7)
512/128: 55-55 (upstream: 12-13)
1500/256: 155-160 (upstream: 25-27)

Rajah - depends on your distance from your local digital exchange - every klm makes a diff - many other factors involved - filters may be needed on other devices plugged in ect.
i have a friend with adsl2+ and he has to get his old phoneline from outside box in his roof replaced to get full possible speed
I am told there is one good reliable way to accurately measure your true speed - and that is to use a ftp program and d/l from a ftp server with a known decent bandwidth- browser style www ones are only a rough guide at best - servers you download from have their own restricting speeds too

Simon is right, I have 512/128 and I only download at approx 50k/s.
Where are you getting 100k from?

Head to http://testmy.net and run the download diags. It will produce a report for you of your true speed. Vary the file size from small to large and compare the results. Another good bb diag program is Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test. You need to register it (iow pay) to get the most features out of it, but as a freebie it is still competent. Find it using Google.

Ta guys. This from > ozspeedtest.com/ >
kbps: 410.8
KB/s: 51.35
Mbps: 0.401171875
Sorry. I misread the details. Should have been, Speed = 100mbps. This is from my 'local area connection', status box.
Still, it's a lot quicker than d/u.
Thanks for your replies & links. :2thumbs:
Regards, L. :D
ps. got 2 line filters off Optus.
pps. Went to 'testmy.net'. Only got 44%.
How do you get more?

If only it was 100mbps. :) Your results are about correct.
Here is my results using the Internode mirror, and the cable speed test (I have Internode 1500/256):
kbps: 1273.4
KB/s: 159.175
Mbps: 1.2435546875
Seems about right to me, my downloads max out at around 160kB\sec. Which mirror did you use, and which ISP are you with?

kbps: 407.6
KB/s: 50.95
Mbps: 0.398046875
& Optus. :D L.
ps. see attached Screen grab.

50 is a little under what I get with Bigpond, but sometimes it gets slower. (512/128K)

In Oz, they call broadband anything 256kbits/s and over. OS, anything under 4mbs/sec they call crap :confuse3:
Do we really have broadband me thinks ?

With my 1.5mbit connection I typically get 180k/second.
Which has surprized me given my location.
