A brief clearing in the weather enabled me to produce this galaxy image. Although NGC 1566 is reasonably bright I didn't find it all that easy but perhaps it's just me.

Cheers

Very nice image of one of my favourite galaxies:thumbsup:
I have not Observed this galaxy for a while through the 16"
On the one to observe list when the weather is better :)

G'day Steve! I didn't know you were even on this forum. You know I am a huge fan your unsung heroic imaging mate! Awesome stuff. I feel like I have fallen a bit behind in the astro game but it's good to know you are carrying on the quest mate!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. I've now replaced it with a reprocessed version which is better I think. Its still at:

if you want to take another look.

Very nice image Steve!!!
Must have a try in a few years time when I lose my training wheels!
Just a curious question though......
What caused the ( 3 ) artifacts that look like comma( ,) to the left of the brightest star ( twice the distance between the galaxy and the star).
They seem to be in a line nw to se.
Dust?
Bartman
ps Not dis-respecting your pic!!!!!!

Bart there are more of these artifacts and i think they might be caused by noise removal??
I sometimes have it too in my pictures when removing noise.

Looks good Steve. The galaxy detail is great and the faint fuzzies are pretty nice too.

One thing though is that I can the overlaps of the data sets especially in the top left corner. A crop would sort that out.

I'd be pretty happy with image.

Excellent result Steve and good on you for doing the repro.

There is plenty of interesting detail in the arms and you have done well to bring out the faint outer arms too.

Nice

Thats for sure, top work Steve, the STL6303 worked well there, a dream cam thats still hard to beat, Ive hankered for one of those for years.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Bart, the artefact to which you refer is just noise. I've since gone over the image with the healing brush and removed most of the similar stuff. Paul, I initially didn't notice the overlaps. I've now cropped it as you suggest.

Wonderful image indeed, you've got both the faint outer regions and the interesting core well balanced. And the colours are just perfect. Great job :)

Well done Steve.

Getting detail in the spiral arms is difficult.

Thanks Steven and Louie. I've often wondered why they call it the Spanish Dancer. I can't see it myself.

I have not seen an image of this galaxy before Steve...you do have a nack of finding the obscure.

Nice image overall, my only criticism being that the star colour is somewhat muted.

cheers

Thanks Martin. You have a good point about the star colour. I've been tweaking it a bit and in the process seemed to have killed the star colour. Hopefully I've now rectified that.

This galaxy is not all that obscure but doesn't seem to be imaged all that often.

Cheers

I have always interpreted it this way -the Spanish dancer is characterised as a lady with a wide flowing dress (usually red, white and black) and the classic back and forth twirling movements when they throw the dress around with their hands results in the dress curving in distinct arms of cloth around the dancer in the centre in opposite directions.

Particularly seen from above it would look like a spiral galaxy :D

Yeah - I guess I can see it now. I still think the people that come up with these names have very fertile imaginations though.
