View Full Version here: : Poll, most speccy Globular Cluster

Seeing we are in the mood for polls I thought I would start one. The question is what do you think the most spectacular globular cluster is? Will the result be predictable?????

ballaratdragons
11-01-2006, 11:04 PM
Again!

We had this question about 6 months ago, but there are probably twice as many members now so the answers will be interesting.

For me it would have to be 47Tuc! But then again Omega C is awful close in the 'best' category.

Micko, where's the poll to vote in? :confuse3:

EDIT: Oh, there it is. Thanks Micko! ;)

P.S. You didn't tell us your favourite Micko!!! :P

I am going to say NGC 104, mainly because I like the tighter core of stars now. I don't know why but it has increasingly become my favorite over OC

M13 for me since it's the only glob in the list that I've seen :).

47 Tuc to me is the more spectacular view and more pleasing to the eye.
OC just looks like a boring old globbie, albeit a very bright one.

It used to be OC for me, but lately i'm more fond of 47Tuc.. maybe it's because that's what i've been looking at lately.

I'm sure in a few months when OC is back up, it'll be my favourite again :)

while omega cent and 47tuc are very pretty, the great O.C. lacks any real character and tuc while better is just really bunched up... I prefer the pavo glob to both of these.

OC for me :)

12-01-2006, 10:55 AM
I chose 47tuc as it is the easiest one for me to find so I have been pointing the Binnos at it quite often lately. Have seen loads more in the Eta Carina (SP???) area but have not studied the charts enough to be able to remember the names.

I like the pavo glob too and if it was brighter it could top the poll.

OC is third on my list, behind 47 Tuc and the Pavo glob. OC just doesn't have the "character" that the other two have.

Apart from OC and 47tuc, i dont recall viewing any of the others that are mentioned since i have had my telescope (sad isn't it  ) 47tuc got my vote though.

This one is easy...47 Tucana followed by the Pavo glob, then OC.

Wonder which one i'll pick :P

I have seen many Globulars over 100 :)

But in a 18" I can look at my Globular for hours and never get over the view ;)

Go 104 :)

this one I think depends on the darkness of the site where you're observing -

with some light poluttin
I find 47 tuc the more high fallutin
but when it's jet black and riding high
I have to give it to Omega Centauri

47Tuc has the best structure easily. OC is massive but lacks the compressed core that 104 has.

There's a very big gap to third, that's for sure.

OC is the one that ROCKS;) 47 tuc is good but It doesnt compare to the OC particually thru a big scope.

1, Omega Centauri
2, Starfish
3, 47 tuc
4, NGC 6397 (Ara)
5, M22

I like 47 Tuc as my favourite. OC is the biggest and the brightest by a good margin but to me it lacks character. Another glob which is superb when its high up under good skies is M55, M22 is also nice in winter. Two other favourites are NGC 6752 in Pavo and NGC 6397 in Ara. I have never seen M13 well elevated but it doesn't row my boat with the views I have had of it.

I'm going to try and get a look at a couple of those that I'm not familiar with before voting, at this point Omega Cent is my fave though perhaps not "the most spectacular glob" - which is what this poll is actually asking!

(mind you Omega Cent through 20x80 bino's from a dark sky IS pretty spectcular to be sure!)

Mine has changed over time. At the moment it is NGC 2808. It has the same intensity as Omega Centauri, but is much finer. Without 20", though, I have always been an OC fan.

mickoking
05-05-2007, 08:47 PM
NGC2808 is a fine globular, it was the first object I viewed with my 300mm Dob according to my log book  Since I submitted this poll I have viewed both 47 Tuc and Omega Centauri numerous times. I still think OC is the better.

47 Tuc, followed by OC, but then they are both pretty cool.

I chose M4 because there is something about it that appeals to me. But if I
would to go with the norm and go with the greats I like 47 Tuc over Omega
Centuri. But on those nights of pristine seeing both 47 Tuc and Omega
Centuri certainly are jaw droppers.

So do I and I live half way up the east coast of Oz :P M31 is a naked eye
object here too. But it is nothing compared to LMC & SMC, you can even
detect the Tarantula Neb from my dark skies, which btw is a neb in LMC.
Imagine that, being able to pick out a neb nake eye in another GX ;)

One day I'll take a trip north again and see what you northerners are missing:lol:

When I first looked through the scope and aimlessly scanned the sky, I stumbled across OC. It actually made me say wow. Being such an "astronomer" with a GOTO scope, I forgot to note what it was. It was only much later that I could put a name to what I saw :P

Please explain why you would need a filter for globular?
A star or millions of stars have the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum
so it is impossible to have a filter for them:P
I find it strange that people say OMEGA CENT has no character obviously you don't study it very closely or you need to see it in a large scope and see the patterns and colour of the stars in it, how many have seen the "Owls Eyes"?
That you can see impressively see OMEGA CENT in a pair of 7x50 bino's has something to go for it,I love 47TUC as well.
NGC 2808 in Carina comes to mind to join the list of globular's that have been posted in this thread.

Too right Ron. But only a few of us are lucky enough to have the beasts to show the exquisite detail in OC. I recon that I've yet to see a photo which shows the same level of detail as my eyeball - it's one of those rare cases that visual is better because the cameras overexpose the core and loose the depth. Grab a big scope and take a close look at the mesh of yellow stars and the detail in the 'chains' as i've heard them called.

I wan't my vote back - I was lured by the immediacy of 47 TUC, but i was weak ...

Gargoyle_Steve

I still haven't officially voted as I'm yet to see the Starfish to make a judgement .... however last night I had my first personal view of M13 and while I was quite taken by it's flailing "arms" as such I then swung my scope immediately to Omega Cent.

No comparison, none at all! :P

Mind you the viewing were just a tad biased - M13 was very low just a bit above the northern horizon, while Omega Cent was riding very high and only a little past the meridian ;) but even if the relative viewing altitudes were reversed Omega Cent would still stand out like canine spheroids!

I choose omega centauri, as it was the first DSO I ever saw, A beginner starting out trying to find anything up there is hard enough but I managed to get my system of star hoping worked out quite easily and managed to see it just fine, Binoculars helped, even though I could see it naked eyel. a matter of getting the scope in that direction.

It seems that I was the only one who voted NGC 6752 in Pavo. It is my favouite. I like 47 Tuc but I really have a soft spot for NCG 6752

My other favourite is Ghost of Jupiter NGC 3242, absolutely a gem.

Hi,

This target in a large aperture scope (over 15") at high magnification (over 400X) under dark skies, is absolutely stunning. You haven't seen it properly until you observe it how I have described. My all time favourite single target.

Hi John

Tks for that.

I plan to go to ASV's Messier Party in Mar. They have a 25" Obsession and a member (a couple) have a 20" Obsession. I must ask them to show Ghost of Jupiter to me.

Omega Centauri for me.

It was the reason I bought my 12" Newtonian. First time I saw it was with the 114mm Newt my wife bought me for a Xmas pressie. I just had to see more detail. Classic case of aperture fever.

The detail I can see on dark nights still amazes me, and gets a big 'wow' factor from guests. Definitely the most speccie for mine.

For a great visual spectal nothing gets more ohh and ahh's like 47 Tuc. I have even had a friend from the US take an involentary step back in supprise from his first view of the cluster. an unfortunate thing to do if you are 3 steps up a ladder. He didn't hurt himself and went back up for a better view.
I also chose 47 as it is looking like OC in not a globular at all but the remains of a Dwarf elliptical galaxy.
For me personally the Globular that is my favourite in the Milky Way is AM1 as it is VERY FAINT and difficult to find.
It is visible in a good 18" scope.

The Ghost of Jupiter is no doubt one of the best PNs out there, but to keep on topic, I'd say Omega Centauri is probably teh most impressive globular, just for its sheer bulk and resolvability.

But if what studies have shown are true, we could be resolving the core of a former galaxy here.......

47 Tucanae by a slim margin over Omega. It was the first object I saw with the new Nagler 7 and 9. I don't think I'll ever forget that stunning 3-dimensional view that took you into the heart of it.

I've gone for 47 Tuc over Omega Cent. partly because of the conjecture about the later being the core of an cannibalized satellite galaxy, but really there isn't a bad one among them and what about M55 in Sag. an often overlooked beauty.

While Omega Centauri is the biggest and brightest glob in the skies... for sheer beauty you can't beat 47 Tuc (and only a little bit dimmer). The really dense core openning out to the marvellous sprinkling of stars is breath-taking, especially under dark skies, a large scope and reasonably low power. I think one of the children at a school night summed it up perfectly "Oh! It looks like someone has spilled a heap of hundreds and thousands on a black cloth".

Can't help remembering those words every time I look at it.
