Spiders in Lismore

Was at a friends place in Lismore over night and I
snapped these two setting up on her porch. Not really
keen on spiders but they make for interesting targets.

Not sure what they are, so maybe someone can help
me out here. They were about the size of the palm of
your hand.

The 1 on the left is a "Golden Orb Weaver" and the fatter 1 of the 2 is called a "Garden Orb Weaver". Neither are considered venomous although they can give you a nasty bite because of their size. The Golden Orb Weaver's web is one of the strongest spider webs of all spiders, it is like steel wire and you can't appreciate how strong it is until you try and break it.

I should mention I guess, these shot have been cropped and shrunk to around 35-40%
and a light sharpening in photoshop.

Nice shots Rob. Spiders are great to photograph, as long as they don't start crawling towards you!

I took a few spider shots recently. The first two were taken over New Years in the Flinders, a huntsman (I think) and a very bloated red back.
The other two were in the backyard last night, I have no idea what they are.

Jonothan, the shot of the last two are both of Garden Orb Weavers. They are either small females or males. The males are smaller than the females. In the Golden Orbs the males are only a tenth the size (or smaller) than the female and you can often find a couple of males hanging around her web somewhere

During my younger days,and in fear of my Kids,and dogs being bitten,
I once grabbed a Brown Snake by the tail,Dragged it to where I could get to it and quickly sent it to the Promised Land,with a piece of wood.
(yes I know, very stupid,Kathy told me that too)

I had never been worried about spiders,until

I had been bitten by a spider,which had dropped down my back when I was in the shed,Didn,t know I had been bitten,UNTIL I felt very itchy under the left Shoulderblade,and the thing bit me again under the arm,as it exited,
via my t shirt.

Being worried about if it was Dangerous,or not,I visited my Doctor,who explained MOST household spiders can do that to you.

I carried the itchyness for several Months,and the bite scars Still remain,
That was 2 years ago.

So my Philosophy,now is,the only good Spider is a dead one,
So,from Here on,I make Em all Good.

I love your first two, that redback sure does look healthly and with the egg
sack would probably be at her most venomous!.

Haven't managed a huntsman yet usually have a couple in the house. We
have had a bit of rain with minor flooding and I'm surprised we haven't had
a redeployment of troops into the house lol.

I agree with Paul, the last two are the same as my fat one.

So in comparison my next girlfriend could be roughly 55' tall if I were a spider. Waaahoooo that a whole lot of woman :prey2: :prey2: :prey2:

Hey Johno,

I know how you feel I used to be like that, still am to a certain extent in the house.
Some a so big I feel like I'm killing something of being. And then I kinda feel bad about
it. They get so big they start to look like animals. I mean I have np's shooting animals
as long as they end up in the fridge.

But snakes, I'll kill any brown snake on the property regardless, like you my son's
safety come first, with young kids it very hard to determine whether they understand
how dangerous they can be. My son has a speach delay and sometime cant express
himself easily. It's a worry. But I will leave the Redbelly Blacks alone, as they do the
same (kill brown snakes) and tend to avoid humans, they are shy if you leave them alone. We've have
about 14-15 snakes in the yard over the last 3 yrs Greens, RB Blacks, King Browns &
Eastern browns. But luckily I have seen one here this summer, except for the brown
the neighbor shot just before Xmas. I've been waiting to try a photograph them too.
I've only managed to get a green snake trying to get in the bathroom window.

snakes dont bother me one bit, even deadly ones. spider on the other hand give me the heeby geebys at night :)

Hi Rob,

Your right about Kids,They are a worry with snakes,As you say,and I totally agree with you,Kids SAY,they know the dangers,BUT, do they,

I have to admit those King Browns,and Eastern Browns are a real problem,Especially with little kids,as they can be bitten Higher up the body.

I know Snakes are protected,So is my Family.

Hope you dont see Too many more Rob.

They are nasty looking Rob, well caught.

Here is a pic from my holidays to QLD over xmas. This bad boy was caught new years night in Buderim just after mid night in almost pitch black. He looks even more nasty when viewing the image at Actual Size.

This was taken at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast a couple of years ago. It's one of the golden orb spiders and that envelope is an A4 size envelope

I hear ya!, your not alone! I think the worst senario was mentioned above
for me, walking into a friggn great spiders web in the dark and not knowing
whether the darn thing landed on you or not :eek:

Maybe I should of called this the spider fear curing thread, I know there is
a name for it, but my brain is only good for 6 letter words at 4:45am :o
