View Full Version here: : Go the Sri-Lankans!!!!!!!

Suzy

Tomorrow is going to be an tumultuous day for me. :confuse3:
It is the day when my loyalty to my country will be questioned, being torn between my homeland and my adopted country. I am of course talking about The One Day International cricket match between Australia and Sri-Lanka. Wednesday 1pm(EST). I will be cheering the Sri-Lankans on, and on occasion, may even feel a little guilty that I'm do so (in moments when S.L. may be getting a beating).

It's also a time when hubby and I will be on opposing teams - It will be a guaranteed battle ground. :argue: Their could be blood, and tears.
It's been a while since the Sri-Lankan team have been here - I'm highly excited.
Time to get out my G&M bat for lounge room decoration. Time to drape my neck with my cricket jewellery, and time to get out my Marylebone Cricket Rules Book to make sure those Aussies are playing fair!

As you can see from the following pics of me (taken in the 80's), I was a real cricket tragic! In the first photo I am proudly wearing a cricket bat pendent, purchased from one of my many visits to the Greg Chappel Cricket Centre.

You think it will be a battle ground at your house? That's nuffin to the battle you've started here!!!!! :poke: There will be blood on the keyboards. The only thing worse than a Sri Lankan supporter this summer is a pommie cricket supporter. Let the battles commence!!! :fight:

Good on ya Suzy; although I luv to see the Aussies do well, what I really want to see is a good competition. With the Sri Lankans winning the first 20/20 the scene is set for a good hit out.

I hope the Aussies can start to perform consistantly and win more than they loose.

All the best.

Oi. Who asked a kiwi to comment. I though we sorted youse lot out last Saturday. :poke: (Great finish wasn't it?) BTW Why do the All Blacks always peak a year before the World Cup?

Suzy
02-11-2010, 06:11 PM
Hi David, I used to do both, but I enjoyed batting more. I often used to get the brothers and hubby out with my bowling. :D I haven't played in years though. Wobbly on the bowling last I played. But I never forgot how to swing a bat. There is real artistic beauty in a batting stroke :D.

I used to go and watch a lot of the Toombul Club matches wherever they were played (such a groupie) and also with the Greg Chappell Cricket Centre connection, I had gotten to know Trevor Hohns fairly well. His wife (I believe she was captaining at the time from memory) was playing for Toombul Womens Cricket, invited me by letter to play for them. But alas I declined. It got to the stage those missile balls left me asking myself important questions on life and death . I started playing with the tennis ball more.

However, that was only part of it. I was a very serious cricket statistician at the time. Nowadays it is easy - computers do all the work on the telly. But nothing beats punching in all those scores & averages yourself and knowing the big ones were coming up. I used to write articles as well (for my own reference). I could map out every field on a piece of paper blind folded. :screwy: My saddest day came, when a certain member of my family decided to clean out the underneath of the house, and my one box full of cricket stuff and everything else within site down stairs got taken to the dump without knowledge to the rest of the family, my mother included. So there went a lot of hard and memorable work. All that's left is one scrapbook album on John Dyson and his letter & photo to me. Anyway, no sorry's about that please, it's all in the past, lets smile and have some fun :).

I am taking the names of all those who don't support Australia in a proper one eyed fashion. Their names will be passed on to the anti terrorists squads as potential enemies of Australia. Expect a call sometime!

Am booked into a motel in Brissie for the first 3days of the ashes at the Gabba. Me & 4 mates, one is Cornish, and a Pom supporter. We are all so looking forward to it all. As skill would have it the Pineapple hotel is 1/2 way back to our motel room .. oh about 400mts from the Gabba. Only stick in the mud at the moment is that it is predicted to rain !!!! well a 75% chance anyway. My Cornish bro inlaw reckons we'll be PRAYING for rain by day 2 :lol: Can just picture it now .. 5 of us perched up in the great southern stand ... 4 of us cheerin, HOPING that the game is going to go 3 days !!!!

Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I suppose you know that NSW scored 250ish and won by an innings and 90 inside two days? If it doesn't dry out in Brissie the sight-screen attendant will need a helmet.

Loyalty?? nothing of the sort. Pommie cricket fans are slow well known learners. :wink2:

Rubbish, there was a time after the Lillie Thomo Boonie period when the Aussie cricketers couldn't win against an English village team:D
and you even had a Crying captain who was undermined by his own team:rolleyes:
but I think this time will be different it will be a more even contest:thumbsup:

AstralTraveller
03-11-2010, 02:27 PM
Actually Boonie was part of the rebuilding after Kim Hughes' retirement. Kim blamed the undermining on former players and the media. In doing that he may just have been being diplomatic but Allan Border certainly asked him to not resign.

I agree this series will be more even than the last time the poms were here, if for no other reason than it couldn't be less even than the whitewash last time. :P I mean Warnie wasn't even bowling well and he took a swag of wickets. He basically scared pommie batsmen into getting out.

ballaratdragons
03-11-2010, 02:41 PM
Geez Suzy, didn't your parents buy you any dolls, ribbons, Johnny Farnham Albums etc?

Your friends must have thought you were a real party animal

Good on you for not following the traditional crowd

astroron
03-11-2010, 02:45 PM
Yes I have been made aware of my mistake of Boonie by a certain "Cricket Tragic";)
As for Warnie didn't he do the same to most of the teams in the cricketing world.
700 odd wickets tells it's own story:D
The Pomms went down hill after winning the Ashes in England a couple of years before:( they seemed to be living on the past glory and celebration and forgot about the job in hand:rolleyes:
This series will be different , I think they are more focused and evenly matched:thumbsup:

Suzy
03-11-2010, 03:36 PM
Aus 2/85.:P Clarky out at 27. :P We're going to topple your top order in no time. :D Go the Sri-Lankans!!!!

AstralTraveller
03-11-2010, 03:42 PM
Yes 708 wickets says he was a great bowler. (Lots of other thing say he was also a very naughty boy off the field.) But by 4 years ago he had lost the flipper and the wrong un and bowled only leg breaks. He was still a good bowler but by no means great. Yet he was still successful and I think a lot of that success was in the batsmens head.

Presently 2/85 in Melbourne - that's probably about even.

03-11-2010, 03:42 PM

Hussey not out at 71. Only scored one boundary. Lucky the Aussies had him to save their bacon.

AstralTraveller
03-11-2010, 06:19 PM
I reckon the score is 20-30 below par. However Melbourne, with its long boundaries, is a low scoring ground. I don't know what the conditions are like. The few overs I saw the wicket looked pretty tame but there is rain in the area. At the moment the enemy has the upper hand. :mad2:

Thank you everyone. I really appreciated your great sportsmanship spirit with me today. :)

I'll still trying to come down from a high. I have been rewinding live tv watching those beautiful batting highlights. Nothing beats the sound of the ball on the sweet spot of that bat!:D We saw some magnificent batting tonight by the Sri-Lankans. What a great save.

And I sincerely do apologise if I upset anyone in constantly bringing this thread forward, thereby taking over other fresh posts.

Next match Australia v Sri-Lanka, Friday 2pm from Sydney. Game 2.

I don't think it would be fair to everyone else to do to this thread what I did today .

Kind regards,

Hi Suzy & All,

Wow what a brilliant thread -- really sorry I missed it as it seemed like great fun, though I was busy tonight for the most part packing to go to Mudgee for four nights. But I did see quite a bit of the match from the 15th over on in the S.L innings.

In summary, S.L played fine cricket. Angelo Mathews, you are a superstar --top knock, well played.

Michael Clarke, you were simply appalling tonight as a captain. Completely inept. You had them down on the ground with your foot on their throat and then just handed them the opportunity to win and all credit to S.L, they took it with both hands. Oh, and BTW Michael, there's someone I'd like to introduce you to ... please meet Steven Smith. You might have bumped into him in the dressing-rooms from time-to-time. He bowls leg-breaks.

[Rant mode enabled] Seriously, (and in more detail) someone needs to put their arm around Clarke's shoulders, lead him out behind the grandstand and hit him over the back of the head with his bat. That was the most inept captaincy I've seen in years from an Australian. Most park-teams are led better than that. They were out for the count and you let 'em off the hook. Utter rubbish and all you could do was stand there and rub your head most of the night.

I've little doubt Steven Smith would have had Malinga out in 2-3 overs with the correct field. It really isn't rocket surgery mate. Both are RH batsmen. Leg-spinners love to bowl to RH tail-enders dopey. Steven Smith should have been straight on after the batting PP was finished.

Malinga is obviously strong forward of the wicket and straight, and likes a bit of pace on the ball -- bowl leg-breaks on off-stump, mix your pace up a bit put the gaps square of the wicket and make him swing cross-batted. Put your catchers where there are likely to be top edges and skied mis-cues -- backward point, cow-corner etc. If you are going to give him an outfield gap forward of the wicket to go over the top, make sure it is on the off-side where he is less comfortable.

For Mathews who is obviously strong off his pads, make him score on the off-side -- bowl 6 inches outside off-stump if you have to. Stack the leg-side infield to cut off the singles there, and have an in-out field on the off-side. If you have to give him singles make him play them off-side or have him walking across his wicket to flick it to leg. Sooner or later, one or both will get impatient and -- match over.

What you don't do dopey is this: with S.L needing 30-odd runs and beginning to believe they could pull it off, bring on Shane Watson to bowl medium-paced straight-breaks and Mitchell Johnson to bowl fast wides and then decide to bowl the last over yourself.

But, all credit to Sri-Lanka. Clarke gave them the opportunity (on a platter) and they were good enough to grab it. Steven Waugh (were he dead) would be turning in his grave. [Rant mode disabled]

Best,

Les D

I think these types of threads are pretty spammy... just sayin'.

I was at Thirroul having dinner with Chris (Omaroo) and the cricket was playing on the TV in the shop. We were there when the 8th wicket fell and the shop owner was saying that anything could happen. Chris and I were convinced that it was going to be an epic fail. I'm glad to hear the tail enders showed the top order batsmen how it's done, with a great batting display. Must chase down the highlights as we missed it from there on end.

Hi Suzy

Did you know in the time of Bradman when it was only really on the radio that the games were broadcast that they simulated the sound of the ball on bat with a pencil rapped end first down on the commentary desk. Just a useless bit of trivia.

I'm about to send messages to my family, perhaps even a phone call. My cousin was bowler on the Sri-Lankan team, he played here last for the world cup when Sr-Lanka won it, and then went on to a top job within the sport, so I am beside myself thinking about all the excitement that will be going on there right now amongst my family, and the country in general. :D

I'll see Everything Les said and double it.:thumbsup:
Absolutley once and for all made my mind up about "the PUP" and his carrer as the Aussie skipper ... I just hope its over.

Fast and medium pace bowlers dishing up juicy half vollies to batsman seeing the ball like its a pumpkin dont know much about their craft either !!!! Great disection of those tail enders ablilites Les .. I didnt go there but rahter .. especially MJ ... whats wrong with pitching it about 2 feet shorter and making those tail enders have to think more about it ... do anything to take them out of that comfort zone ... GORD !!!!!

Anyway, if the opposition puts in a performance like that then they deserve to get belted and lose ... Congrats to Sri Lanka was impressive display from the tail and they capitalized perfectly !!!

Call me a bloody traitor, but I just love to see the Aussie cricket team get thumped. I'll never forget the chapel "under arm" problem and I would like to see this team get its nose rubbed in it for the next decade, just to know what it feels like.,,, Arrogant sods

I don't know who to expect to win today. After Wednesday the Sri Lankans will be feeling pretty good and the Aussies pretty bad, but both sides know the Sri Lankan top order capitulated. But I also think the Aussie batting is brittle, though punter's return should help the batting and captaincy. The weather will also play a part. It's already raining on the central coast and down here the few patches of blue sky seen earlier are gone and it's overcast and grey. It isn't a matter of if there is a rain delay but when.

C'arn the Ozzies. :D

I'm here Mozzie :hi:
I wasn't home this afternoon, so the summary I wrote below is taken off the Cricket Australia Website unfortunately. But I am here and watching now since the Australians started batting.

I'm not doing score posts like I did in the last match, but it doesn't mean I won't comment;).

Today we are onto the 2nd One Day International between Australia & Sri-Lanka. Sri-Lanka have already batted and gotten 213.

On the Sri-Lankan side who batted first, Mathews got 17 runs off 11 balls (good man) & Dilshan hit 47 off 57 (another hard worker). Dilshan also hit two boundaries from the first three balls from Johnson. :D And Tharinga not out for 86 (he takes his cricket seriously).

Now Australia are batting. Australia's second wicket fell at 2/32  Gosh, Aussie, what's going on, and that was Ponting that fell at the second wicket . I'm going to write a letter to apply for opening batsman . Come on Aussies, get your act together.

:party2::party2::party2:

PARTY TIME!

They have just won their first One Day International Series in Aussie.

The final match in the series will be played at the Gabba on Sunday.
I hope the Aussies get some serious practice, and some good "talking to" for the next match.

Boy, I'm glad my cockiness paid off for me in this thread, otherwise you guys would have had a field day with me :eyepop:

Hello Susy, are you there?? Hello ... hello ....

Not a peep out of you after last night. :P

Actually it was very nice of the SLs to get the game over by 7.30 so I could switch over and watch A history of Scotland. :D

Hancock was more entertaining than the Sri Lankans batting :P

We let you guys have that game so you'll could save face. :P:P
And are you kidding me, I wasn't going to be posting last night - that was just asking for trouble . You may as well have tied me to a bougainvillea bush and pegged me with rotten tomatoes. :screwy:

But seriously, well done Aussie. In just 22 overs you ate us up and spat us out  It is good to see you'll back in form. I was secretly hoping you'll would win, because after the Sri-Lankans finish playing, I am after all, back on the Aussie side. :D I know, I know, there's a word for people like me :(.
I was squirmming with embarrassment with that pathetically low score of 115 runs in 32 overs. We already knew the game was won by the Aussies after the Sri-Lankans had finished batting. Wasn't rocket science to work that one out, then after the first 2 wickets fell, all hope was gone for the slightest hint of a challenge. Apparently this match attracted the smallest crowd at the Gabba between an international team and Australia.

Yep, was nice of them to rap the match up early wasn't it - the family got to watch their movie.
