First Telescope

Ok so i went the way of the binocular, bad idea, spent $200+ on a Saxon, worst thing i could of done couldnt see a thing, collimation was out.

I have around $400 to spend now on a telescope, now i know it wont get me the top of the range im wondering where i might get something for that price?

check the IIS classified, theres some awesome deals there i picked up my 10" dob here for less that your budget... and its 700 dollars new.. youd be looking at either an 8" dob or a 6" dob depending on if your buying new or used. if you can stretch the budget to 500 that way if your planning on buying new you can buy an 8" dob

6" is an very good starter scope, maybe post an ad up in iis classified wanted section, i got replies within the day, maybe todays your lucky day :thumbsup:

Hi, just to bolster your spirits I started with a 4.5" reflector and did the M110. About then I was starting to push the limits of the scope so I moved up to an 8". With it I have almost completed the H400.

The good news is that I am no where near the 8's limits. A good used 8 can give you a lifetime of observing.

Mind you a dark site is a great help.

Thanks Brian i will hunt around for an 8" then i think.

Good news is that i live in a smal country town in WA in a new estate so no other houses next to me and no street lights so we get very dark nights :)

I did try to get a refund but was told they dont give refunds and that i had to send them back to Saxon for a warranty replacement :(

Should of joined IIC before i bought them as alot say Saxon bino's are poor quality.

Bought a 6" Skywatcher Dob for $405 including postage so hopefully i will see alot more than with my 25x80 binos.

I would suggest you contact the Department of Consumer Protection (http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/ConsumerProtection/) and ask about your rights to a refund. It sounds to me that the product was not fit for what they were designed to do from the day you bought it.

No chance of a refund. Supplier has the option of repair or replacement.
You can only get a refund if the product does not do what the seller claims. Even a poor pair of saxon binoculars will work, just that you won't get the best views possible. You get what you pay for.

Yes unfortunatley i might just put my buy down to bad research and learn from the mistake.

My 6" Dob should arrive by the end of next week so hopefully looking through that will bring a smile to my face :)

It could've been worse. Im glad i found this place before hand. I finally got a 10'' Dob after months of searching, just waiting on the eyepieces i ordered. Like you i can't wait to get my first look at the starts through a Dob. Hope you enjoy your new scope when it arrives.

your 6" dob will bring smiles a plenty to your face providing you take the time to learn how to use it. Collimation will be a needed skill as will the skill to actually see what is there.

However take heart, I developed the needed skills which means you can too.

Might I suggest when you start to collimate your scope simply trust that the secondary is ok and play with the primary.

You should still try to get the binoculars replaced or repaired. The problem with cheap gear isn't so much that it's all crap but that the sample variation is large.

Wish i could of afforded the 10" Brett but i guess i have to start somewhere maybe a 10" later down the track when i start to learn the night sky better.

Brian that is one thing im a little concered about is i have read dob's need to be collimated but hopefully it will come with instructions :)

Steffen i think i will try to get them repaired once the bino's are in collimation im sure i will enjoy them too and a pair of bino's and a scope is even better.

www.andrewscom.com.au is a great place to get a scope for a low price i got my first scope thru them and have been buying ever since,you can get your self a good starter scope like a 6'' DOB for around $350 good place to checkout in the future but im sure most of the members here are aware of andrews and can tell you abit more.

I second Andrews Communications, I bought my first CB from them in 1990, and my 8" GSO dob for $449 in 2004, and they are still $449!

Supplier does not have the option for repair or replace -
Sale of goods act is quite specifiec.
They can say all they like, but if you are not happy with the product because it doesn't do what it says it should then you can get a refund -

Jenny is right, if they were defective when you bought them you have a right to a refund regardless of what they say, it's covered by the TPA.
