I am looking suggestions for where I can get an adaptor that can connect canon lenses from 300D to a Sbig St-8300C.

Peter Lee may be able to help. Send him an email and ask him if he can fashion an ST-8300 to Canon EOS EF adapter.

Why not just use the ones designed for the job?

10064 Camera Lens Adapter $119 35mm Camera lens adapter (Specify Canon FD, Nikon) for ST-8300 cameras with filter wheel.
CLA7-8300 Camera Lens Adapter $165 35mm Camera lens adapter (Specify Canon FD, Nikon) for ST-8300 cameras without filter wheel.

Woops, didn't realise SBIG made them!
I was going on the assumption that they didn't make them, like the STL -- just the Nikon adapter. : (
I had Peter send me one over for less than a quarter of the price that SoCalAstro were asking.

I found the reference on the SBIG site on the Price page, and another reference where only the Nikon is mentioned. Also I email Peter Ward a couple days ago where he said only the Nikon adaptor is currently supported.

It may pay to contact SBIG direct as agents don't always know what is available.

Hans,
That's an FD lens-only connector. Not many people use them as it's all EF nowadays.

Hi Brendan
Try Stellar Technologies (http://www.stellar-international.com/index1.html)in the US.
Note the following from the ST site:
“Wide-field adapters must be specially designed to guarantee that infinity focus will be reached on the camera chip. This requires that the backfocus distance of the lenses and the backfocus distance of the particular camera be taken into consideration in the design of the adapter”.
Cheers
Dennis
PS – if you want one urgently, I have one that you can borrow until you can buy one

Thanks for that Dennis, I've just ordered one. Here was me thinking I had just bought everything I could possibly ever want while the dollar was high. Silly me!

SBIG announced at AIC that they are just about to release Canon EOS adapters for the ST8300 with or without filter wheel.

Canon *EOS* lens adapters have never been available from SBIG, only FD versions, which virtually no-one uses these days.
There will be a Canon EOS/ ST8300 (mono version) adapter released within a couple of weeks...it needs to be used with the FW8300. Price TBA.
The ST8300 colour version (ie Brendan's) is a bit further away. My best estimate is first quarter 2011.

Hi
I just received my ST8300C with Baader 2"/T2 nosepiece threaded for 2" filters.I will be using the IDAS LPS 2" filter for imaging with the telescope in a light pollution area.
I also want to use with EOS lense for wide field imaging.
Has someone here used the SBIG Camera adapters EOS Lens adapter for ST-8300 Cameras (http://www.scopecity.com/detail.cfm?ProductID=8707) and whether the LPS filters can also be use. Not so clear on this although a mention of a spacer in lieu of filter wheel. :help:
Waiting for clear skies.

Hi
The spacer required for the ST8300C is not yet available, I have been in touch with SBIG about this and have expressed my displeasure after I was assured that the Canon EOS Adapter would fit either the C or M models. The last email I got from SBIG stated the adapter would be available two weeks ago, they have refused to answer my emails since.
Really quite annoyed, a better solution would be from PreciseParts or Hutech.

What spacer do you speak of John ?
The adaptor is available now
http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=319-327-328-16311
Is something else needed ?
Also be good to know what part is needed to add 2" filter like IDAS LPS to this setup.

Hi Chris
Been a long time :).
The adapter shown in the OPT page requires a spacer to get the correct Lens to Camera distance. The actual EOS connection piece, as shown, is available and will fit the ST8300M WITH the Filter Wheel, if you are using the ST8300C, that spacer is not yet available, contary to SBIG's own advertisments, there is no way of fitting the adapter as yet. There are no screws or other parts supplied with the adapter as shown on the OPT page.
Information I got back from OPT a couple of days ago was that there is still no date for the release of the spacer so I have a completely useless EOS adapter until the spacer arrives.

Yeah has been a long time. Excited to get back into things.
Ok thanks. That is annoying for sure and misleading marketing as no where does it say you need another spacer.
Any idea how you would also use your ST-8300c with this adaptor and filters like 2 inch idas .

My plans are to use this camera with a 200mm Canon L lens and possibly later with a 400mm, as to whether you can use this adapter with filters, I don't really know. That why I got a OSC, didn't want to use filters :D.

STI make a line of adapters.
http://www.stellar-international.com/index1.html
I got one for Canon lenses to go on my ST4000XCM (John's old camera). Originally it was too long but I sent it back with the length required and Richard shortened it for me. Great service. Send him an Email, I am sure he will oblige.

Hi
Anybody has any experience with this Baader Adapter, a cheaper alternative
M48x0,75 - 2" filterthread - CCD Adapter for Canon EOS lenses (EFS und EF) (http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p4389_M48---2--filteradapter-for-Canon-EOS-lenses--only-14-5mm-length-.html)
I use this Adapter from 2" barrel to T2 (Baader #2408150 - part 16) (http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p481_Baader-Adapter-auf-T2--M42x0-74--fuer-2--Steckhuelse---Fokaladapte.html)with the ST8300C and telescope and it allows for installing IDAS LPS 2"(48mm) filter.
Thanks in anticipation.

The stuff arrived today. An adapter for the SBIG ST8000C to mate with Canon EOS (EFS and EF) lens.
http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p4511_T2-adapter-for-Canon-EOS-lenses--only-14-5mm-length-.html
Alas cannot fit a 48mm screw in LPS filter.
Weather not so good. Will test with aircraft lights tomorrow night if cloud cover persist.

Patrick is good to deal with huh? Agreed, the 48mm filter will not fit, but a smaller one will, either a T thread version, or 1.25", according to the blurb on the listing. I'd be looking to see if you can actually "fit" a 48mm in there, inside somewhere, and maybe use something like "Blutac" to hold it, I've done this before.

I ended up ordering a custom adapter from PreciseParts, it is 26.5mm long and designed to accommodate the 44mm lens backfocus (EF Lens) and the 17.5mm front plate to chip distance on the ST8300C,
Should be dispatched on the 5 August.

I ordered one from Hutech
He matched up the parts I needed and it also takes a 52 or 48mm filter with step down ring.
Just tell Ted what distance you need from chip and the lens type and he will sort it out.
Is this one here at the bottom of this page
http://www.hutech.com/astro/deepskycam/index.htm
Detals on site are very sketchy but just email them.

In case anyone stumbles across this thread (like me), SBIG now sells a Canon EOS Lens Adapter for ST-8300 (http://www.sbig.com/Canon-EOS-Lens-Adapter-for-ST-8300.html) that provides the correct back focus spacing for the ST-8300M with FW8-8300 filter wheel, or ST-8300C + spacer.
