i was musing through some items getting ready for Lostock IISAC06 when it dawned on me. I have too many eyepieces!!! so you say how many is too many??? I have two eyes, and observe with my only good eye, so therefore 1. Now I like some different magnifications so now I will have a few choices, for me i finally decided on a 34mm 2", a 32mm 2", a 30mm 2", a 24mm 2", a 20mm 2", a 17mm 2" and a 9mm 2". So now what will I do with all the others I have left??? I have in total 14 eyepieces and 2 barlows :scared: . :help3: please note i only have 3 naglers (donations of more gladly accepted, even a Ken telepoo 80  )

So my question to you is how many do you have? :wink2:

I have 6, I bought them as a package deal from T&A for $180

All Plossls, a 4mm, 6.5mm, 12.5mm, 20mm, 25mm and 40mm

Wouldn't it be nice if I could swap them all for naglers or panoptics or Radians.

5 at the moment..

1 premium (14mm Meade UWA s4000) and 4 GSO plossls. Hoping to include some premium planetaries (maybe orthos) after some careful consideration (and viewing with them) at Lostock.

Oh and 2 barlows (3x Antares and 5x powermate). I offloaded 2 other barlows (2x and 2.4x to Mr DP).

I have 13, 3 premiums, 4 middle of the road, 1 GSO, and 5 egg cups (because they function better in that job) and two barlows x2 & x3

Frankly, I'm embarrassed; I've only got 2, a series4000 26mm plossl and s5000 14mm plossl.:ashamed:

shredder
10-01-2006, 08:13 PM
No Need to be embarrased, I also started with two, the two that came with my scope, both Celestrons MAs a 10 and a 20 from memory and for my money they were the best I had for a long long time, far better than many of the other name brand plossls that I got later. Cant say why they just were well suited to the scope and for some reason seemed to be made just right (statistically some must come out right). The Mead Plossls have a very good reputation, and nothing to be ashamed of.

But now I must say I have a collection of about 13, and only use the Mead 4000 SWA's and UWA's now. The others are just collecting dust, not worth selling and cant seem to find any real use for them. Though I did cut one up just to see how it worked (so to speak) as it didn't.

I have 4:
1. 30mm GSO SV
2. 26mm MEade 4000 Plossl
3. 22mm Panoptic
4. 17mm Orion Stratus (well, coming very soon!)
.......and a crappy Barlow :P

My Ultimate Plan?
1. 41 Panoptic
2. 27 Panoptic
3. 22 Panoptic
4. 16 Nagler
5. 13 Nagler (yes, I just sold it.....but she will come back to me when I have more $$)
6. 11 Nagler
.....and a top of the range Barlow :)

Now I've taken up imaging, & flogged a few EPs off I have...too many, for the simple fact I don't use eyepieces anymore! :)

nothing fancy really - basic bread and butter stuff ;)
i have bought and sold a couple of sets over the years

current set - all old 1.25"'s
TV plossl 25mm
TV plossl 15mm
" " 11mm
some i bought for various afocal set ups over time

Meade Series 4000 32mm super plossl (i like this one - coz of extreme low profile focus on my dobs cant get focus in anything over 30mm without modifying ep or scope - and this one works due to weird recessed system)
Meade Series 4000 26mm super plossl (crap - a joke)

William Optics DCL-28 24mm (i dont mind this one visually)
Scopetronix Maxview18mm WA (this is my only true wide field with a mere 66º afov - from memory? :( but i get the idea and yer their great but i like high quality views too ;) not that good an ep for anything but tourism - bearable

barlows
University 2.8x Klee barlow (had this forever - love it)
Celestron Ultima 2x (classic! :) )

keep meaning to get some better visual ep's,( ive looked through good ones and i know the diff - mostly contrast and especially colour is better to me ) for many years now lol - photography gets in the way - and my scopes are very forgiving of average quality ep's anyway

I put down 12, but now realise I miss counted and I actually have 13 - is that unlucky? (maybe I should sell 1 or buy many more :D )

Of the 13, only 4 get any serious use:
31mm T5 Nagler
19mm Panoptic
13mm T6 Nagler
8mm Radian

The rest include a Meade s4000 4.7mmUWA and 12.5mm Plossl, 6mm and 9mm 66 degree Expanse clones, a 17mm GSO Plossl, 2 x 25mm Plossls and 2x 10mm Plossls that came with scopes. Next purchases will be in the 10mm range (either a 10mm Radian or 10mm Pentax XW), and a 24mm Pan - then i will be finished.......honest!

Here are my fantastic 4 in a lineup.......

12mm UO HD ortho
18mm UO HD ortho
7mm Pentax XW
10mm Pentax XW
14mm Pentax XW
20mm Pentax XW
27mm TV Panoptic
30mm GSO Superview (for the benefit of chocolate coated kiddy fingers) :)
2" 1.6X Antares APO barlow
1.25" 2X Orion Shorty Plus barlow
1.25" 2.5X TV Powermate
22 different filters from various colour filters to UHC to OIII to 2" DGM Optics NPB

Wish list ? nil, maybe 1 day change the 27mm TV Panoptic for a 26mm Nagler T5 but in no hurry as the 27mm Pan is pretty darn good.

Those of you with spare EP's that you truely don't use anymore, please concider putting them up for sale in the BuySellTrade forum.
I know I'd like some more budget eps that I can let the kids have, instead of letting them get their grotty little fingers on mine.

I voted "10" ep's, but just realised I have 11 - and al of these have been aquired in less than 11 months since I bought my first scope!

4 ep's came with my 10" dob - 4mm, 9mm, 15mm and 25mm plossl's
(2 are GSO's, 2 are Series 500's) I bought another 25mm plossl to feed the pair of them into my binoviewer - this is the extra ep that I forgot to count.

I also have a 9mm and a 25mm Meade "MA"s (whatever that means exxactly). These came with my ETX-70.

Then I have the 4 ep's that I actually chose to own, and purchased separately. These are the ones that get pretty much all the use:
8mm Orion Stratus
13 & 17mm Baader Hyperion
30mm 80° Andrews 2"

I do have the Saxon binoviewer as mentioned above, and somehow have accumulated 3 barlows as well.

I think I have too many optical "bits and pieces" lol ...... garage sale coming up!

(Edit: Actually there was also a GSO 32mm wide angle that was included when I got the 12" dob, making a brief total of 12 ep's, but then I threw the 32mm in with my 10" dob when I sold it, as well as the 9 and 15mm plossls that had come with it - so total remaining at present is 9 ep's)

JimmyH155

I have far too many - 13 in total
20mm Celestron
10mm Celestron
26mm Meade 4000 plossl
12.7 mm Meade 4000 plossl
9.5 mm Meade 4000 plossl
6.? mm Meade plossl
6mm bintel plossl
26 mm Meade QX super wide angle
40mm Meade 3000 plossl (useless)
7mm ortho
18mm ortho
13mm Hyperion
8 mm Hyperion
The most used favourites are the 2 Hyperions, 26mm Meade 4000 plossl, 18mm ortho and my beaut "Cluster buster" the Meade wide angle QX.:D :D

I just bought myself some Meade series 4000 super plossl's, a 32mm and a 9.7mm. These are pretty nice EP's. Before these I was using the three EP's that came with my Tasco Newt. 4mm, 12.5mm and a 20mm. They are fairly average EPs now I have played around with the meade's altho I still use the 20mm as a finder.
I dont have a barlow yet, so thats something to look forward too in the near future. I have to say, Its a lot of fun. I bought myself a nice s/h ETX125 not long ago and playing with that has been very cool.... and now with some good EP's its cool all over again. My next trick will be to buy a webcam and strip it down to fit into the ETX. Altho I have to say the quality of the images taken by people on this message board nearly satisfies all my image needs. Theres some amazing people taking amazing snapshots of the skies hanging out here.

Because I own 2 SkyWatcher Newts I have 2 sets of 10mm and 20mm Super Plossl eyepieces from them plus a 2x Barlow that came with the 10 " scope.

1 x Meade 26mm Series 4000 which I got with my Meade DSX90-AT. Very crisp, high contrast piece, good for projection photography.

A 9mm and 25mm SWLET that I got with my 180mm SkyWatcher Mak. Nice wide view. Some colour fringing but not too bad.

1x Celestron 4mm Plossl that I got for US$12 off eBay. Usable only on extra good seeing, still nights. In fact now that I have the Vixen LV4mm I don't use this piece at all.

Last but by no means least a Vixen LV4mm and a Vixen LV20mm. Nice eyepieces.

So I have eleven but only regularly use the Vixens and Barlow. Would like a 32mm or 40mm for the 180 Mak. Probably get another Vixen LV.

Sorry I forgot I just ordered a 12.5mm Orion Illuminated Reticle from Bintel today so that makes it an even dozen so far.

3 x Tele Vue Naglers (12mm 17mm 22mm)
6 x Vixen LV (7mm 10mm 12mm 15mm 20mm 25mm)
4 x Orthoscopic (25mm 20mm 18mm 12.5mm)
1x Cheap Plossl (20mm with crosshair)
1x Barlow (2.8x Klee Barlow)
1x Tele Vue Power (5x)

Thats 14 eyepieces and 2 barlows:D

When I bought my 1st scope, it came with 1 ep, a Chinese 2" 32mm.
Then I bought a set of 9 cheap 1 1/4" Chinese Plossls, which included a Barlow, to see which ep's I used most.
The my second scope came with another 3 1 1/4" Plossls.
I have just bought 7 Vixen LV's, a 4; 9; 12; 18; 25; 40; and a 50mm 2", but as yet there has been nothing to see, except clouds, and they look the same through any eyepiece.

I'm one of those people who can't get rid of anything, in case it comes in handy sometime, but on this occasion, you may see a few ep's in the classified section in the next few months.

I recently bought a 2.5x GSO Barlow, to make my 20mm behave like an 8mm, and my 10mm become a 4mm. Results are quite good, now I have 4!

Saturn at 250x is looking much better! ;)

You know I will have to go and find all mine - haven't used them in two years, thats sad! the 16" lightbridge I just bought might need them! going over this post there are certainly a heap of EP's lying around!

Ups the ante to 24 plus five barlows - I can't resist a good price on an EP and the barlows are for imaging to give a range of focal lengths.

My collection grew like topsy. I have some eyepieces dating back to the 70s, some from when I bought the 15cm refractor, a swag that came with the new 25cm GSO and then I treated myself to something nice. I haven't even looked through them all!

Unitron 40mm Kellner & 20mm Erfle
Celestron silver top plossls 17mm & 7.5mm
1rpd 30mm
Andrew's ED 9.5mm, 5.2mm and 11mm UWA
GSO SP32mm; plossls 25mm, 20mm, 15mm, 9mm, 6mm, 2x barlow
Williams Optics binoviewer with a pair of 20mm eyepieces
TeleVue 9mm Nagler T6

That's 17 eyepieces and a barlow. Trouble is that the collection isn't balanced - I'll have to rectify that!:D

6 x 1.25" (a few RKEs , Plossyls and Orthoscopics) , 1 x 2" (50mm fl Parks Gold Series).
1 x guiding illuminated recticle eyepiece.
1 x 0,96"-1.25" adapter.

I have a 1.25" 2x barlow somewhere too.

Wow some you guys have extraordinary eyepiece collections and have spent a stack of $ on them.
