Folks
I'm after a couple of ICX098BL B/W toucam chips to mod some
toucams I'm playing with. Finally figured out that to cool a toucam the best way is to buy a miniature peltier chip and slap it directly under the sensor. Only need about a 1.5w peltier to cool the 100mW (max) sensor to between 25-35 Deg C below ambient. Add a little DC/DC converter from farnell and your done. So now it's time to do another and mount it on to an old SLR camera that's been gathering dust in the cupboard. I'm fairly sure Framos has some but I'm loathe to send my credit card details in this day and age so I'm looking to buy a couple from anyone locally.
Let me know if you have a spare or two and we'll work out the price.
Thanks everyone
Regards
Stephen

Well, I did this mod to a toucam, but with a fat finger to the chip. It took more power than I thought (a peltier directly to the chip would be vastly superier though). Dew is going to be a huge problem too, hope you have considered this. It all sounds good, but I suspect yr heading for a world of pain?. How will you get the heat away from the hot side?.

Took a 75mm square by 10mm thick block of aluminium and had a mate mill two slots for the pins of the sensor and also mill down about 7mm between the slots. Then mounted the peltier between the slots and press fitted the sensor on top using the plastic lens holder from the toucam. The got a cpu heatsink with fan and roughed out a 50mm square in the middle and metal puttied a galvanised fence post top in the hole. The toucam circuits just fit in it. Drilled some holes in the bottom and glued/bolted a 15 pin vga connector on. Used an old vga cable to a box and split up to lx/amp off and usb cables and a 12v switch/cooling on/off. Then threw in some desicant and screwed/silastic'd it together. Seems to work ok but it's early days.
One thing to note is that the peltier only produces about 1-1.5 watts of heat so there's not much to get rid of.
