G,day
I am thinking of starting a project that involves observing DSO's that just clear the horizon from Perth (approx 32s). The best I have done so far is M31+M110 which culminlates at 17 degrees. There are two targets in particular that I am interested in bagging. M51 rises 11 degrees above the horizon and the double cluster (NGC869+884) which scraaaapes the horizon venturing only 1 degree into our skies. Any one with any horizon scraping heroics ;)

WOW sounds like a great little project. Wish I have a clear horizon to do the same.

I will have to travel a bit to see the Double Cluster. Plenty of clear northern horizons on the wheat belt.

The only fairly low one I've looked at was M31. Sounds like an interesting project though dude.

We W.A.A.C.ers can just make out Andromeda in the lousy W'gong/Sydney sky glow.(sometimes up to 30/35degs)! It (31),doesn't get much above 20 degs? or so. :D L.

Yep! (well not quite 'scraping' but on the horizon) At Snake Valley Camp Davo and I witnessed an absolutely pristine Saturn and 5 Moons without any distortion when Saturn had risen above the horizon by only a half the thickness of a hair!!!! It had only been fully risen for about 1 minute. We both captured it but I can't remeber wher we posted our shots. Davo got it with the Toucam and I got it Afocally.
It was truly amazing!

All,
I'm compiling a list to do the same thing from "up" here (N32.75). I've been out every clear evening trying to see Achernar but have failed so far.
Good luck with your project.

I tried to find the Globular NGC 2419 in Lynx recently but the light pollution close the horizon here is too much for many objects :( I guess this is a dark sky project.
