Ok, i have had a look at starry night (jupiter II program still to be downloaded)

Lets try again.

Starts at 3.40am and finishes 5.30am odd.

I am thinking 90 second avi's @ 10fps and say every every 5-10 minutes.

what was everyones experience from last time. will 90 seconds give a nice round io shadow or will it suffer "star trail" like problems??

Any ideas

No idea really Dave. Perhaps play it safe & go with 75-80 seconds? Not sure.

90 seconds is fine, Io doesn't move that quick. It really depends on your focal length. If you're bird, working at 10000mm then 90 seconds *may* be too much for him (i'm sure he's done the calculations), but with our short focal length newts 90 seconds should be fine.

Do a first run and give it a quick process to see.. Also, it depends what you align on in registax. You can probably do 2 passes through registax, one for the planet and one for the moon/shadow, and then stack/combine them after.

Fingers crossed: last nights seeing was looking very good, saturn was very still on the computer screen at 1000x mag, but as i was still focussing, the clouds moved in and never left!!!

so from 3.30 am est, i hope to start getting something decent of jupiter and its moon!

It will be 42 degree at 5:20, so please weather gods, be nice to IIS members tohight!!!

11pm clouded in.

3am, clouds gone

3-3.45am saturn

4 - 5.30 10 gbytes of jupiter

here is a quick one shot at 320 x 200 , but with my hartmann mask, i was processing as i took my 2min videos, and i think it is starting to dawn on me that a aperture mask is required to stop the awful fringing i am getting, so i used my hartmann mask to see what would happen and instant improvement.

I will have to wade thru to see if most of the session is wasted due to fringing, but i have learnt something.

Not a perfect session, by any means, but i have solved a problem and that is always satisfying!

Looking great!

1. Why are you getting fringing? What type of fringing are you talking about? Yuo have a reflector not a refractor??
2. Why are you shooting at 320x240 instead of 640x480?

Your preview shot looks very nice, can't wait to see the results of your night.

That's a 'quick one' ?? That's a rippa! :scared:

Looks like the refractor has me over a barrel for jupiter....No matter what I try I get purple bands!...I HATE PURPLE BANDSSSSSS!!......NOOOOO!

Damn....Another mountain to climb working out the settings for jupiter with a refractor! *sigh!!* I also had to move the scope to another place because theres a darn tree in the way for Joop! Right on top of an ants nest I had to setup didn't I!! I just spend an hour killing ants in the kitchen 'cos the laptop was covered in 'em when I brought it in!!

Ok, I'm thru venting for now...:P (me no like jupiter!)

I have noticed a trend in my jupiters of where the bands meet the edge of the planet, the shape is wierd and also as the day was getting lighter, i noticed the image on the screen there seemed to be a ring around then 10% outer edge of the planet all the way around. I have been putting down the poor stacked results to seeing, but as I have been making sure temps are within 1.5 degrees. The seeing was great tonight say 7/10, so there must be something else. I have video from raw format, 320 x 240 and 640 x 480. The only way i can describe it was it seemed similiar to rob and asimov's mars discussions re fringing, so i thought i would throw the hartman mask on to see what would happen and straight away the image on the screen improved???
320x240 to be able to get a quick result whilst taking the next video, i can stack that quicker. also, if the 640 x 480 look crap, then i can process the sized down ones!
lots of post imaging work ahead of me!

Are you using the raw aluminium adapter on the toucam Dave, or the black one.

Dave

Sorry if this seems a silly question/ but what exactly are you referring to re: 320x240 Vs 640x480???

Is that your lappie on-screen resolution????

Cheers mate

Nice image, by the way.:)

Matt, it's the capture resolution that you set in k3ccdtools (or other capture program).

640x480 is the max resolution of the ToUcam, but you can also capture at 320x240 - which has 2 advantages:
- Smaller amount of data being transferred down the USB1.1 pipe, meaning less compression even at 15fps
- Faster processing

But the major disadvantage:
- Image Scale. The end result will be half as big and if the seeing is really good, you usually want the biggest image you can get.
