Another one from last night. Shot until dawn :P
18x10min with the hyperstar. Bit soft as I didn't refocus all night. The CF tube is working a treat but I'm pushing it.

Bigger version here (http://memkxw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pVow7LO-IBlsQ_83qXizMRRDCGx5zMHBrq472skY0PC U_f0w3CB3AoHcGoisenp4i5GDP5qLSRNgZR aoySyFgK76sitYWJhno/IC434_HS3_Ha_ff_starless.jpg?psid=1 ) and of course a version with stars here (http://memkxw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pMmFTtHdGo9WC-ECiDVmQwTdLYB55Ybyu0N2VPaEK05LBqGac mS0VIjxtp9qmmPw95aRkRnKnHxrgiuGmvNA Dsp11-McvBEAq/IC434_HS3_Ha_ff.jpg?psid=1). :)
Thanks for looking again.

It's beautiful!

Nice one Marc, it seems to me that one side is softer, perhaps there are some collimation issue with the hyperstar?
I like the starless version, it makes the nebula looking as you are floating in the sky somewhere closer to it :)

Marc,

This might be the best image you've taken to date (second only to NGC 6188).

It's like a painting. I really dig that.

Well done!

Both pictures are nice, cant quite decide which I like the most, both have merits. Still some remnants of stars visible in the starless version..... If they were not there I'd probably pick the starless version.

Thanks very much David.

Thanks Andrew.

Thanks JJJ. Glad you like it.

Thanks Marco. Yes the focus was progressively getting worse by the end but I wanted to maximise the amount of data I got before sunrise. It's very noisy next to full moon so I coped a fair bit a sky background. I'll definitely revisit it and do it properly as I want to do a mosaic of the whole orion area.

Thanks H. Yes that was the idea. The starless version has some depth to it.

Thanks Clive. Yes I'll need more data to make them both smoother.

Man, how did you fit all this imaging in, in a single daylight savings night? :eyepop:

This is a great FOV, but... Marci Warki, I think you could tidy it up a bit though, that amount of work deserves some careful processing, there is a sensational image in there somewhere the potential is obvious.

Very nice Marc, it has an ethereal quality about it.

You could always try a bit of deconvolution to tighten the stars a tad if you wanted.

Thanks Mike, it just needs a lot more data and no moon. As you said I had to fit as much imaging time as I could between 2:00am and sunrise so the focus went south. Now I know what to fix. I will revisit and redo it but this one is good enough. I'm happy with what I got out of it so far.

Thanks Greg. My image scale doesn't allow for much deconv with the hyperstar I'm at 3asp already.

Top work Marc, seems to be fairly deep, nice to see the dark clouds below the horse that are oft missed.

Really nice Marc, Loads of detail in this image to work with. The overall size of the image is fantastic, it's huge. Very nice capture for so little time. The hyperstar certainly bring the SC to life.

Well done.

Prefer the full star version, you did a good job with Alnitak

Thanks Doug. When I got it in PS I took the stars out to process them separately otherwise I would have had to throw half of the subs which I would have normally done if I wasn't suffering from serious imaging withdrawals. :P When I started stretching the data it looked really cool and deep so I thought I'd keep that one starless then add better data down the road for my mosaic. The HH clears my roof east around 2:00am so I haven't much time to get as much in as I can.

Thanks Phil. Yes I'm enjoying it a lot .

Thanks Fred. It should all pop up nicely as I add to it, hopefully soon.

Thanks Trev. Didn't do anything with Alnitak. I think the offset and the dense Ha filter killed any potential halos and my OTA is flocked to hell too which helps a lot.

That looks really cool Marc.
Lots of detail
I love the version with the stars in it and i think you could use some deconvolution and even some sharpning without stuffing the picture up.
Can you write an howto on the processing you did?

Thanks Martin. I pretty much used the same method I posted here (http://www.multiweb.com.au/astro/tut_01/). The focus did go out by a lot and as everything was tracking ok and I was short of time I chose not to stop. I think I can definitely do a lot better next time.

Hi Mark,

Your photos are fantastic.
I love the starless version.
You Hyperstar setup gives amazing detail. You should try it on the Andromeda Galaxy, M31.

Thank you very much Ross. Yes I have been itching to get some of those northern DSOs and hook up with Astrofest one year but it's a bloody long way from home and I know pretty much nobody up there. Maybe one day.

Hi Mark,

We are off to Coonabarabran in 2 weeks to try and get the last of Andromeda before it sets for the year. You're welcome to come along.

Big fan of your work Marc, to the point now where there's I'm actually feeling some anticipation clicking on your links! :D

And you didn't disappoint; the starless version is just so surreal in its beauty - hard to believe that's really just up there. Good call leaving the bigger stars with their diffraction patterns in.

I don't mind the softer focus of the starry version either; it adds to the dreaminess.

Two pics with loads of character!

Thanks a lot for the very kind words Ivo. You can't really remove the big stars. It leaves holes in the pic. The little sandy ones are alright though. The whole shot has a bit of an eerie feel and with the stars gone as you have no plane of reference the lighting adds some depth to the whole scene from dark foreground to light background.
