A little Helix

I took this last night with my Hyperstar and QHY8. 15x10min subs with a Baader 7nm Ha and a QHY8. Turned out alright despite a few passing clouds and the shinning full moon. I honestly thought that I would get more outer loops and arcs though :shrug: ...faint bugger.

Slight field rotation due to PA. I haven't imaged for a while so I got right into it and skipped a bit on the basics :whistle: ... and now I even got a Losmandy polar scope for the G11. :rolleyes: how bad is that hey? :P

Overall a very good night. Better than tonight and tomorrow night by the look of it... Got two other DSOs from the same session that I will post later.

Faint one for sure, the camera at f6.5 should be able to go to 20 min subs, that should give you more density in the outer areas.
Well done with the polar scope, I had to remove the factory led and put in a variable version as the stock one is too bright, plus a couple of thickness of sticky tape around the inner shaft to reduce play.... But it does make aligning childs play:thumbsup:

Hmmm? yes the outer areas are very faint but I would have thought 2.5 hrs at F2 and 280mm aperture would have revelaled a bit more too :question:. Maybe t'was becasue of the Moon? What band pass is your Ha filter? What about your calibration method is that sound, there are big dark patches above and below the Helix?

Thanks Mike. I put that down to skyglow and clouds (i.e. patches and noise). Calibration works fine. Will have to avoid the very faint stuff during full moon. :P

Nice one Marc. Might be small but you have managed to capture quite a lot of the outer detail. I would love to see one exposed for 9 or 10 hours from this system to see how much bounces off the screen.

Have to agree Marc, one needs to avoid the faint stuff on a full moon but then again if we did that we'd all be taking the same images

Thanks Doug. :thumbsup: When I have the rig on a pier I'll be able to put in that kind of integration time night in night out. Setting up and reproducibility right now is what's killing me. The details is there in the subs though but very close to the skyglow and noise. I reckon on a moonless night I would have hammered it easy though.
