A sketchy first attempt

These are my first attempts at sketching the sun.

The prominences are certainly out of proportion. Obviously because I wasn't using black paper, I struggled to convey the lighter areas on the surface; I chose just to represent them as lighter, squiggly lines.

Both were drawn while viewing through my 10mm Ethos, on a PST. The first was done at about 12.15pm today (19 Oct 2010), while the second was at about 5.50pm.

WOW! Truely beautiful work, Alexandra.

These are the first solar drawings I've actually seen, and I've also never seen the sun through such a scope. I am most impressed.

And the changes that can be seen over a few short hours, amazing, really amazing!

Thanks, Mental! I was surprised at the sunspots not moving as much as I expected, actually, but I knew the prominences would have changed.

I'm in love with solar viewing now - and I've only had the scope for a couple of days :lol:

Well done Alexandra. Solar viewing is definitely addictive. I've had one go at sketching an active region in Ha, but have really got to sit down and get serious with it - maybe this weekend. The changes are amazing - I found that by the time I'd got the end of my sketch, it was already different. I look forward to more. And maybe we could start putting observation reports form solar viewing up as well - I've yet to do one, again because the changes happen so rapidly.

Paddy, I can't imagine how I'd go about writing an obs report on the sun, to be honest, partly because it changes but mostly because I'm still coming to grips with the nomenclature! :D Addictive it is though...
