Gentle morning light radiates throughout the Mackenzie Basin.

In the distance is the beautiful turquoise Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo has a surface area of roughly 83 square kilometres and sits approximately 700 metres above sea level.

The lake is being fed by the pristine glacial Godley River, seen in the image proper, as a network of braided twists and knots. The water in the lake has flowed 30 kilometres south from the Mount Cook region in the Southern Alps.

H,
A clear photo with plenty of rich colours. Did you have an open window? Brings back memories of a 20-day walk a bit further south. No digital cameras in those days though....

Wonderful image - were you hanging out of the bottom of a plane?

Good one. Most of us struggle to get decent landscapes with tripods at ground level, and here you are producing gems from inside a plane.

Troy,

Thank you, my friend.

Also, look who got his 3rd Daily Deviation in less than a day of posting it? ;)

Okay Humayun, I hope you've given up your day job, because anything that takes time away from your photography is just depriving the world of more brilliant images. Another beauty, of course. Congratulations.
(When are you going to give Tassie the old Humayun treatment??)
Cheers,
Brian.

I love this. Perfect light and colour.

The only thing that jarred slightly was the crop at the top. Your eye is drawn from the little rivulets in the foreground to the mountain on the right, up and over to Lake Tekapo and the plains beyond - but then the final little bit of icing on the cake - the mountains in the far distance - are cut off just at their summits, denying you that last little morsel. Would be better either cropped just below - or if there is more image available - just above those peaks?

A very beautiful photo as usual H, and one of my favourite places in NZ. Is this taken through a window?

Another beauty H! How did you manage to avoid the reflections and glare on the window?

Cheers,
Stephen

Trent/Julie,

Thanks, guys. : )

David,

Cheers. : )

Jeanette,

Thank you. : )

Mark,

Thanks, sir! : )

Chris,

Thanks, mate.

No open window -- taken from the window. I lost a lot of images due to reflections that I can't resolve in Photoshop, unfortunately.

One day, I hope to do to the Milford Track or the Routeburn Track. When I was there earlier this year, due to all the rain, there was constant reports of people being airlifted fromboth tracks due to the flooding. :eyepop:

Cheers!

Ian,

Thanks! I wish I was hanging out the bottom. Alas, I was on the starboard seat for this capture; I had the row of seats to myself so was moving about as required.

Rowland,

Thanks. Something a little different. : )

Warren,

My humble thanks. : )

Marc,

The blues of that lake are insane. I'll see if I have any others showing just how beautiful that glacial melt colour is.

Brian,

One day, mate. One day. Hopefully not too far in to the future.

Tasmania is on my to-do list. Perhaps next winter?

Thanks, all.

Troy,

Thanks, again. : D

Geoff,

I wish. Just in the middle section of the plane. Thanks. : )

Ric,

Cheers! The braided twists and knots are incredible. They form their own little perfect networks.

Frank,

Bud, cheers. : )

lol, Lake Take-a-poo? : P

Adam,

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The image would have been complete if I had captured the snowy peaks in the centre top. Bugger! I'll have to do again? : )

Thanks, all.

Rolf,

Thanks, mate. It's such an incredible part of the world. So rugged, yet so serenely beautiful. Yep, taken through the starboard window of a Cessna of some description.

Phil,

Yeah, and dark, dark skies at night time! Lake Tekapo is part of the Starlight Reserve sanctuary. I've never been there when there's been no Moon. Three times I've been, and, all three times have been during a large Moon phase. : (

Thank you. : )

Alex,

Thank you, my friend.

Stephen,

Cheers! Given the sun was my left and we were making a right-hand turn, I was pointing at a shallow angle and there were no reflections or glare to be seen. Also, I was shooting at 105mm. Of course, I was shooting with a polariser, too, so, that may have assisted a touch, too. A lot of my other shots have been ruined due to reflections and getting parts of the plane in key locations in the composition. Bugger -- need bigger windows!

Thanks heaps, everyone.

H
