I’m considering purchase of SAMSUNG CCTV 600TVL 0.0001Lux SECURITY Camera Model SDC-435 for my next project capturing of meteor spectra. This camera is currently available from eBay for around 135A$ but only in NTSC version. The search for same camera in PAL version here in Australia come up with prices up to $1000 for one! This camera uses 1/3” CCD chip and that what I need to get half decent resolution in arc seconds per pixel, as I will be using 25 or 35mm lenses. It is a compromise between the resolution and field of view. I have a two PAL version of GStar and colour Mintron camera with ½” CCD . But I have never used NTSC camera and I would appreciate any comments as why it would not be suitable.
My two frame grabber’s I got accept NTSC imputes. The software I’m using accepts NTSC inputs. Most of today’s TV’ accept NTSC inputs. Is there any other issue I should consider?

NTSC stands for Never The Same Color..........Just Kiddin', it used to be in the days of vidicon tubes and stuff, but nowadays, what with better electronics, it's not that bad.........

I can't think of any really significant reason why not to use the NTSC camera unless you have PAL only monitors/TV's etc.

Maybe someone who specialises in this kind of electronics can chime in with a more definitive answer - I'm interested in the real answer too.

Hey Karl,

I was considering the Samsung SDC-435 before I bit the bullet and went for the top of the line Samsung SCC-A2333.

The NTSC version will be very annoying if you view on a TV. If you only use it in a PC then it will be ok.

The NTSC version on our Aussie PAL TV's will give you a scrolling wide band across the screen and terrible colour rendition.

I don't understand how you can only find the NTSC version of it on Ebay, when the Americans who WANT the NTSC version can only find the PAL version in Ebay.

Anything you want to know about these SDC-435's from settings to wiring in remote controls to images is extensively covered in here: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/VAA

There's even a thread about the ebay seller selling the PAL version.

Hi Ken long time no see. Yeah it is funny. I can get the camera from Korea NTSC model for about $A135 against PAL version of same camera from Australia for anything between $400 to $1000. That’s smell of rip off. But it may be that Samsung have fire sale due to US marked crash. Anyhow, if any of your friends on Cloudy Nights want to order this camera here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160387121366&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_3084wt_ 752
The model you are using is much more advanced, but for my specific needs ( capturing meteor spectra) this model seems ideal (and price is right). With capturing software I’m using I can not use longer integration then 32X. What is important to me is to be able to get clear image with minimum background noise and not many hot pixels

Did anyone actually purchase one of these and how do they perform ?
What capture software do you use ?
Do you have any Images that you have captured ?

Thanks
