Just lost a wheel on my trailer on the way back from IISAC

I'm literally 5 minutes from home and I heard a clunk and look in my rear view and see the trailer tipped on its side, scraping along the ground.

The left tyre came off!

Took ages to find the damn tyre, but the threads are stripped and I can't find the wheel nuts.

It's going to cost me $120 to get it towed less than half a kilometre around the corner to a trailer place, not to mention the cost of getting the wheel hub fixed/replaced.

Just what I needed!

Luckily my wife and neighbour were able to come and help transport all of the stuff that was IN the trailer back home for me. Now waiting here for the tow truck..

So close to home!! But, at least it didn't happen on the freeway. That could've been nasty.

Thats a bit of bad luck there being so close to home.

120 bucks for a tow,well someone always wants to make a quick buck.

Rotten luck Mike, you can get a wheel hub from supercheap for peanuts ($30 odd), they're simple to replace (5 minutes) even if you're mechanically challenged.

Take the old hub with you as there are a couple of different patterns.


I had a wheel come off my 4Wd once, the rear wheel nuts had been deliberately loosened, I'd driven to QLD and back after the wheels were off last so it wasn't a case of the nuts loosening over time.

I'd heard some clanking noises in the driveway a couple of nights before and went outside to check but found nothing.

I'm fairly sure they were after the alloy wheels as the other rear wheel had all wheel nuts loose as well, the fronts were still tight as, I suspect that I disturbed them in the process of trying to steal my wheels.

Got it towed to the trailer place around the corner ($121), and they'll look at it in the morning.. probably cost another $200+ to fix. Who knows.

Anyway home now and all unpacked.. Well, mostly. Had to wash the car, wow that was dirty :)

Bummer!... all went well though when you think about it. As you've pointed out it could have been real bad if it happened on the freeway. No major damage done. You're still ok and you got all you gear safe at home.

wow - well at least you're in one piece, shouldnt be that dear to fix. the road near the river up there might have shaken them loose if they were not done up tight to start with?

yikes.. your run of bad luck has not finished yet! but could have been much worse so can be thankful for that. wrap yourself in cottonwool for a week!!

Bummer Mike. But you are right, it could've been a lot worse on the freeway! Imagine if it had happened somewhere around the hills into or out of the Hawkesbury crossing or Moonie Moonie Bridge:eyepop: (if you were going that far;))... you'd have some fun finding the wheel there, not to mention potential high speed carnage!:lol::P Good thing you live in flat country!:thumbsup:

As for me I lost 2 little M3 (I think) countersunk screws out of the Lightbridge focuser...:rolleyes: but I found 1...:)... and that's after the loss and finding of the EP locking screw on the way up!

Could you of put the spare on with a couple of nuts from the good side butchered on to get you round the corner ?

Mike just go to an autoshop and buy 5 studs and nuts (they are usually holden studs) jack the thing up and knock the damaged studs out with a hammer, put the new ones in and you are away. The hub can take a hell of a beating before it has to be replaced, I know from experience :P.
