All,
Just thought I'd share some good news (well, for me, anyway!)
I just got an email alerting me that one of my images has been pre-selected for the judging panel of the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2010 competition, landscape category.
phw0ar!
They've requested a high-resolution image and that will decide whether it proceeds any further.
10,000 pounds up for grabs. Wish me luck! : )

Nice one Humi, can you divluge which image or are you sworn to secrecy? Is it an astro flavoured one?
Is that 10K GBP to the winner or spread across place getters etc?
Way to go! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Go H, you gotta love that kind of recognition of your work.
Cheers

Top stuff H.
I wish you all the best, that's the type of publicity you need to get your name on the map.
The prize money is nothing to sneeze at either.

Thanks, guys!
Mike, it's not an astrophotography one; you can see the entry in the IIS terrestrial forum, at the moment, actually -- The Cloud Piercer Rests. There wasn't any astrophotography section, either. The categories were: Adrenaline, Creative Licence, Joy, Travel, Portfolio (where you could submit ten of the same themed images), Documentary, Landscapes, Wildlife, Britain Inspired, Fashion and Portraits.
There were 18,821 entries in the landscape section.
The 10K goes to the overall winner, if I'm not mistaken. Not bad dosh!
I'm trembling with excitement. I know I'll be up against some quite stiff competition, but, we'll see what pans out.

Congratulations,Humayun. That's a fantastic achievement. And an amazing photograph - I can see why they've selected it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. 10,000 pounds would buy some nice astronomy kit.

Well done Humi. All the best in the competition and even if it doesn't quite pan out it's recognition of your ability as a photographer just to be asked.
Fingers crossed for you.

Nice one H,
Did they ask for a bank account number and personal ID details so they can "wire" the prizemoney into the bank, so you can get the royal family out of prison and the 10 grand is the handling fee to be able to do this?
Just hope our dollar crashes down to 40 pence RIGHT BEFORE the money is sent....
Great work.

Ok got it, yep, very nice indeed, looks like it crosses all the T's and dots all the I's of landscape photography . I can't imagine how a judging panel could possibly select from 18 000 images :eyepop:
Same amount as the Eureka Prize but that was shared between 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Well, ya got ta be in it to win it..and so far ya IN IT
So have you been shortlisted or are you an actual finalist? Even just getting shortlisted from 18 000 entries is friggin amazing :eyepop:
I bet you are, my fingers are crossed for you :)

Eric, I kind of hoped my A Moment Forever Caught in Time (http://users.tpg.com.au/octane2/amfcit.html) waterfall image would have got the nod. I've received a lot of positive feedback on that image, even by professional landscape photographers from all over the world. Even if they said just two or three words, it meant the world to me.
Jeanette, 10,000 pound would be a great downpayment, or part of one, anyway. : )
lol, Chris, funny you mention 419 scams, I was on 419eater.com last night for a fair bit reading the Skeleton Safari Trip thread linked to on the home page. So much comedy gold.
Troy, yep, The Cloud Piercer Rests, it's in the terrestrial section at the moment.
Mike, as you can imagine, a lot of people, from all skill levels entered. So, there's a lot, and, I mean a lot, of snapshots and HDR rubbish, which the panel of judges would have just clicked next on. But, I honestly don't know how they weed through all that. That's just the landscape section, too. There's the other categories that would have received equal amounts, if not more, submissions. :eyepop:
At the moment I've been short-listed/pre-selected for judging.
Thanks so much, guys. Even if I don't progress beyond pre-selection, as Allan mentioned, it's a step in the right direction. :D

Not to take anything away from that Cloud Piercer shot, but Moment Forever is one of the most magical waterfall shots I've seen and should be top of anyone's list.
I remember the Cloud Piercer shot. Did you ever go back and re-do that cyan stuff we commented on?

Chris, Narayan, Terry, Geoff, Suzy, Petra, Trent & Julie, Jen, Molly, Adam, Shelley, Rolf, Carl, Leon, Ron, Barry and Martin,
Thanks so much for your kind words, people, and, wishing me all the best.
Looks like I won't be progressing any further with this one (I should have heard back by now, I think). Oh, well. It was great to get that far; I honestly didn't think I'd get looked at at all.
If there's one thing I'm good at in life, I'd like to think it's the thing that makes me happiest the most -- being behind the lens. Having got that far, I think I'm on the right track, and, will need to take a few more (overseas) trips to produce that winning shot.
Right gear, right place, right time, right light, and, maybe next year might be a different story. : )
Thanks, again to everyone who wished me good luck.
As an aside, I hope to start running some landscape workshops of small groups of photographers in the coming year, along the coast north of Sydney, and some other locations I have in mind. First one in each location will be a freebie to gain feedback and learn from the process (to offer better workshops), and, as such, I would be more than happy to extend an invitation to friends here should they be interested.
