You may have seen it being advertised here on IIS, but our local astro club, Macarthur Astronomical Society, is hosting a week-long event at our local art gallery in Campbelltown NSW. The Campbelltown Arts Centre is hosting our once-off event we've simply called "m a g n i t u d e". It's comprised of a visual printed display of mounted astrophotography by our members as well as 44 original JPL photographs of the Voyager II mission past Neptune.

In addition to this, all manner of members imaging and visual telescopes will be on-hand to entertain and delight the public. It culminates in a talk on the last Saturday (9th Oct) by Dave Reneke at 4:40pm and then Dr. David Malin at 7:00. This will be held in a brilliant audiovisual facility with great sound and graphics.

We hope the public will come along, and judging by the quality and size of the outside display at night facing traffic through the centre of Campbelltown, we assume plenty will :) The whole event is designed to excite the south western Sydney public, and to gain a little sympathy to our light pollution problems here in the south west.

I've been involved in colour photography and print nearly my whole working life, but never before this have I had to prepare colour images for presentation on a building.

Selection of photos from this evening - showing the Campbelltown Arts Center - a beautiful building in its own right, and several of the members images. You may notice Humayun's Rho, Pleiades and B33, my moon and Debbie Taylor's Cat's Paw. Wow - this wall is 6 or 7 meters high and 12 long. It's very, very impressive in real life. This light show is on every night from dusk to 10:00pm until the 9th of October.

See posts #5 & #25 for more photos of the outside as well as the interior of the exhibition as it was set up.

Also see the YouTube time lapse of the main image wall as it was set up by the gallery staff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXBmSh0Sspg

That's a brilliant idea Chris.

So great to see you guys promoting Astronomy to the masses.

I hope this inspires some of the young folk out there to get more involved in a creative and productive past-time.

I'm excited too, just at having seen your display photos.

But where is the "Enterprise" (drawn at 8 years old) ?
… and the "Datsun" ?

:):)

Cheers & Regards

You have it in one Craig. Hopefully plenty of kids in our local area and their parents will get a kick out of this, and become involved in their own way. It's going to be a top little exhibition. During the day, we have solar scopes out on the forecourt too.

+1 for the WOW. This is a great event. Congratulations Chris and to all involved!

I'll speak to the better half when she gets back tonight but I reckon we'll come up next Saturday. If you see a tall bloke with a beard and akubra say hello. Do we need to book for the talks?

Thanks David & Mike! We're only using one of the two projectors, so if I rehash the movie's aspect ratio a bit we could spread it right along the entire side of that building. Hmm.....

Hi Chris & All,

Congratulations on your event and very well done to the organisers. You deserve a good crowd and let's hope the weather holds-up.

Thanks very much Les. We set up the internal exhibition this morning. We have prepared nearly 60 A3-sized colour and mono prints that will be paired with A3-sized presentations of original photography from JPL concerning the Voyager II flyby of Neptune.

Should be a blast. I'm going to attempt recording a time lapse video of the art gallery setup. Should be a bit of fun. If it works I'll YouTube it.

IT all opens this morning at 10:00am. Hopefully, with the bad weather, parents will be trying to find things for their kids to do indoors and bring them along. Wish us luck! :)

Chris, do you have a roster, so there's a better chance of being there at a time to run into some some well known names? It can't be the weekend because that clashes with our Year 12 40th anniversary reunion.

Andrew

Hi Andrew

I think that the weekend is when people will really come. Given that, we have more of our own coming on the weekends as well. Rosters are quite light on during the week as the expected volume of traffic will be low in comparison. I think that most of the committee will be there on most days though. I'll be going every other day for an hour or so to see if anything needs doing.

We had a good number through today - at one time the main room was getting quite crowded.

We were there about lunch time Tuesday. I had a great yarn with the guys on duty. SWMBO had a look through the rest of the exhibitions when she had seen enough stars. :)

After lunch in the cafe, the sun came out for long enough to get a quick look through the Lunt before it vanished back into the clouds for the rest of the week. It is out now and probably will be long enough for me to mow the lawn.

Thanks for coming down Andrew, and I hope that you enjoyed the little exhibit. I'm sorry I missed you - it would have been great to have a yarn. :hi:
