Hi all

New member here. Recently moved to back to Australia from somewhere else

I don't know much about astronomy, but I know a bit about photography. Obviously, it's quite popular to combine the two hobbies isn't it :)
I would love to take up astrophotography, but before hitting the deep sky stuff, I'm looking to do wild-field shots, and some time-lapses.

My question is, being new to this forum and new-again to NSW, where is a great place to shoot, that has dark skies, offers wild camping and a great foreground if you want to include it? I've thought about including sand-dunes in the foreground, but the places bing/google tell me are places like Mungo, and Perry Sandhills, neither of which seem to offer wild camping.
So, any tips folks? I live in Sydney, but don't mind a bit of travelling. Unfortunately for the next few months, I'm driving a 2WD car.

My girlfriend and I want to go camping this October long-weekend, and I thought it'd be the perfect time to try my hand at photographing our beautiful night sky.

Thanks in advance :)
Adam

Hi Adam, welcome to the site. A couple of places you could try are Warumbungle National Park, Snowy Mountains National Park or Barrington Tops. Might be worthwhile doing a search on the NPWS website for ideas as well
cheers :hi:

As Adam has noted ... the Warrumbungles are worth a go. Interesting volcanic rock formations, very dark skies, well-run basic camping grounds (the main one has hot showers in the nearby amenities block). Not only that, you can pop into Siding Spring Observatory and look at a very big telescope in the visitors' gallery. It's a good time of the year for this area too.
