Some Macro Fly images.

Unfortunately,I was not able to make it into Roma St park,I was in Brisbane for weekend,and we came close to getting in Troy!.

But my son wanted to go 'Jumbo' not 'Bimbo'-so we had a small group go to the airport on Saturday morning.for plane spotting and photography-the light was not good.

We stayed at Geoff's at Capalaba,he lives near a park,and I got some macro fly photo's in there.the first 3 are in my garden,the other 5 at Capalaba.

I hope these are of some interest to BIMBO members.I used 450D with 60 mm canon macro-It 'corrupted' Geoff,with its sharpness,-so another new bimbo member on the way Troy!

Any comments or advice,greatly received,I did use 430 EX flash.

Chris - I love 5&6 - nice and sharp with good choice of focal plain which maximises the amount of subject in focus. F numbers not given. Flash at times can be a bit harsh and often generates black backgrounds or shadows which I think are not as natural as well lit genuine backgrounds in soft focus. I use natural light and a tripod whenever possible to achieve this. With insects however, flash may be necessary to enable fast camera relocation. Great sequence of shots.

Wonderful collection there. Some beautiful flies. #5 is probably my pick of the bunch in terms of composition and pose.

That is a varied collection there Chris - the slender bee fly (no. 5) is my pick. Nice work :thumbsup:

Very good set Chris, well done. My thoughts:

1 - good composition and well exposed.

2 - prefer the composition of #1

3 - slightly soft focus (on eyes), otherwise good. Well exposed, since Yellow is typically hard to expose against in macro from my experience. It's a tachnidae of some sort (you can tell via the ledge on the rear torso).

4 - bad angle, but very interesting insect. Looks a bit like a syrphidae of some sort.

5 - Lovely shot, nailed focus. I like the OOF background too. Well done.

6 - lovely shot of a dolichopididae (I think I spelt that right lol). Hard to get a shot of, since they have very fast reaction times and usually fly off with the pre-flash. The workaround? Set your flash to manual mode, rather than E-TTL and play with flash ratios, since it does not emit a pre flash.

7 - My guess, the same insect as #4? Pity about OOF.

8 - Much better shot than #7, although every so slightly OOF (you can tell by the lack of eye detail).

A very good effort - you've improved a lot since I was lost online on IIS.
