G'day all,

I just looked at a photo of a dude who connected a 10 inch collapsible newtonian onto an equatorial mount. Is it really feasable to do that?

I've always been told that it's not possible to connect a collapsible to an eq mount. But if you do a bit of tinkering is the impossible possible?

Cheers

It all depends to what extend "possible" stretches for you ;)

The centre of gravity is slow low ion a collapsable you need a ladder to view.

Generally though if your putting a dob onto a EQ it would be for no other reason than to use it as a astrophotography platform where height and orientation means nothing.

the issue though is getting a mount that can cope with the weight requirements of these scopes. sure they can track but need windless nights and any errors are accentuated by the high loads.

But it isn't impossible at all. its quite a easy modification to make. a few drilled and tapped holes a radius block each end and a dove tail. done.

Bloody cool photo that is! Amazing.

I was thinking of getting a 10 inch collapsible dob and am feeling that soon enough I'd get sick of nudging it to track objects. An eq mount would be far more appropriate for that.

Interesting.
