well this is the very first time i have imaged this galaxy, but the conditions were absolutely terrible. The neighbours had their floodlights on, the dogtrack was on, and a few night sporting fields were going, but then there was the stiff 30-40km/h winds as well that were gusty - that eventually died down at midnight. I hate the city, the light pollution and outdoor lighting....... that said, i tried my CLS filter. the image ended up being comprised of 20 x 10minute shots at iso 800 wit hthe canon 40D in the 127Ed, focus was spot on, but as you can see the seeing and the atmosphere was crud. oh to have imaged this from somewhere very dark........... I havenrt yet fitted my HP worm and block on the G11 but will do soon as i get enough courage....
the processing isnt crash hot - will redo later stacked in DSS and processed in Pixinsight 1.61 - resized for here in PS

Looks alright, Dave:)
Given the conditions you had to put up with (nothing a slingshot can't fix:):P)

That looks pretty sweet. Nice details in there.
Nice really David. Not sure how hard you hard to work to get it there, but I was expecting a green, gradient-encrusted wobbly smudge of creamy stuff from your initial description of the challenges faced
Way ahead of my first 253

Nice detail in he galaxy Dave. The sky looks a bit too black to me - perhaps to counteract the light pollution?

well thanks for the replies - i added a little bit mor data last night to make the image up to 41 x10minutes - processed in Pixinsight - shrunk in PS for here. now i consider this finished but i know its only the first repro;)
the first one was the stacked image with the gradients removed and the second is the "finished" shot

Dog gone! :eyepop: that's not bad for an image taken during flood lit night renovations!
At least you are snug in a dome...I was sitting idle in an open field at 2deg C last night...with the remnants of a bad cold

Yep the final shot looks great. In the old film days we would regard it as impossible to get detail like that with such light pollution going on. I could see the glow from the dog track from my place that night

Bad case of lens flare from the neighbours lights eh, Dave? It looks just like NGC 253...:P
Excellent work mate! You gotta be happy with that!

after i got this data i did a quick few shots of different lengths and stuck them in the one stack to get this - i look forward to this m42 season.....:lol:this was very very low and in severe light pollution

funnily enough they recognised the shape as an observatory:question:

Is there a 'David Hough Plan' in the near future to move to darker skies?
or not possible until retirement (even if SWMBO allows it then)?
