Astrophotographer of the Year Awards

Congratulations to all the winners of the Astrophotographer of the Year competition this year!! Australia was represented well, especially in the Deep Sky category with Martin Pugh scoring 2nd place for his Veil Nebula shot and Eddie Trimarchi getting a highly commended for his Trifid image. Richard Higby grabbed a highly commended in the Solar System category. I was thrilled of course to get a highly commended for my Orion's sword image (http://www.pbase.com/gailmarc/image/121582105/large).

Thanks for posting the results Marcus and of course congrats to all the Aussies - we certainly did do very well.

Mike - no excuses here other than the sheer lack of opportunities to produce images and keep them out of print. I had to withdraw 2 images that had made it through, which I subsequently discovered had appeared in print. So my chances went down markedly. That Veil Nebula shot was never going to be a winner anyhow - just not striking enough. To be honest, the one I posted the other day is vastly superior in almost every way.

I shall meet the Deep Sky winner at AIC next month, so will shake his hand then.

Of course, all of you avid DSLR users out there should be mightly encouraged by the overall winner.

Gee, over 150 views of this thread and only three congratulatory replies :sadeyes:...gee how bout some enthusiasm here guys :rolleyes:, no mean feat to finish this high in such a big competition!

It's really nice to share such great news with friends on IIS, makes it even more special :love: when replies are forthcoming though :thumbsup:

Well Mike I congratulate all the entrants on their efforts in producing these fine images and the courage to submit them for summary judgement, placings however are somewhat arbitary in such 'art' shows.

I had two shortlisted entries withdrawn for similar reasons...but happily got a consolation prize by having some solar images and text used at the RGO in their current exhibition "how to photograph the Sun".

None the less ..Well done Martin (and the rest of the Oz troupe)!

On the images, I may be getting old but I am stunned by the Orion wide field. Compared to what was considered good in the 1980s this is just amazing.

The creativity depicted in many of the images is mind blowing and gives one room for thought. Inspirational.

I agree with Marcus that the wide angle shot of Orion by Rogelio Andreo (USA) was extraordinary. The composition, detail and colour is exquisite. This seems to have raised the bar again in this category.
