View Full Version here: : Do We Want to Know When we Will Die
Hi Guys, some of you may not like this, but I am expanding on the tragic lose of a person due to a very freak accident the member of the ELO Band.
If you were able to know, or wanted to know, would you like to know when your time was up.
Say we could have a time frame, and it included the years, like 2010 to 2011, and then we found out that in 2011 we are not here anymore, and died somewhere in between.
Me personally i would like to know when I was going to die, think of all the preparation one could do, but that is just me.
Some comments please, death is inevitable.
Leon

Not particularily. I am happy to go when I go but I dont want to know when.
Adrian
Hi Leon,
Rather than being able to know when you are going to die it would be more useful
to know where you were going to die. Then you just wouldn't go there.

I don't really care either way Leon but it would be good to
know when the Mother-in-Law goes....

Nah I think it could stop you enjoying and making the most of the time you have left I think it would mess with your head if you were not completely prepared for the end. Unless you were already an enlightened being.

Interesting question.
A lot of sensitivity needed here folks, as some people may actually have been given their approximate 'use by' date, by medical science.
I believe the temptation to have a 'peek' is very high with us humans.
Imagine say, your end date was made available on a web-page somewhere .. could you really resist the temptation to have a peek ?
I reckon this old saying is a pretty good philosophy to go with:
"Live life as though tomorrow is you last day ... but plan as though you're going to live forever".
Cheers & Rgds
PS: I believe it was Bert who pointed out the other day that "there's must worse things than death". Perhaps this perspective helps to reduce the temptation (?)

Go with the flow and I assume you mean by natural causes or knew exactly based upon some accident happening
what will be will be
consider the differences if it was tomorrow or far far away

For me, there is no point in dwelling on death, especially if it is sometime away...therefore, i would say no...

I agree with this approach. To remember that any moment could be the last seems to me the best way to appreciate each moment and live it fully and lovingly.

Reminds me of another one.
Reverend Billy Graham was asked what he would do if he knew he was going to die tomorrow. He replied "Start a Garden this afternoon".

I wouldn't mind knowing. That way I could make plans. e.g. If I knew that I had 3 weeks to live, I would sell my pet snake because my family would more than likely knock it on the head or release it into the wild. Both of which is illegal.
I would also like to die in my sleep.

when your 20 - your never gunna die
when your 40 - you say "crap - i'm half way"
when your 50 - the parents start to go and you say " crap - i'm now the top of the heap"
when your 60 - you say "well i got a good 10 or 15 years in me yet"
when your 70 - you say "must be just around the corner now"
when your 80 - you say "are we there yet?"
i made up my mind a few years back (after the usual cancer scare and the realisation that i was at the "top of the heap" stage) - whatever you want to do today - DO IT!

I'm sort of hoping that God will make an oversight and forget to call my number.... however, as this is highly unlikely, I think I'd rather not know when my number was up! Geez, I'd stop buying astro-gear..."No use buying that, won't be here to enjoy it..."
Cheers (as best you can on a subject of death)

I wouldn't want to knoiw when I would die, especially with my lifestyle ;) in this case ignorance is bliss. As long as it's not before the next clear night, I'll be right.
I just like to take each day as it comes and enjoy the surprises.
Knowing when the big day was going to happen would just be too depressing in my mind.

I think because we will not get an accurate used by date it is something I would not care about......but if we could know I would want to know - I like to be planned!
I like the idea of getting my affairs in order and telling my family and friends how much I love them (regularly) and then relaxing and enjoying life not knowing when my time is up.

I was advised to get my affairs in order in 2007 before undergoing life saving surgery.
I considered myself fortunate to be given this "extra" time. A chance to sort through possessions, spend time with my children, a last ride of my horse, a last pat of the cat, a last night spent at the scope.
How many people get this opportunity?
Sure, it was a sad time, overwhelmingly sad at times. But I found joy in the smallest things and honestly, I was at peace with my situation. :)
The support I received from the members of IIS and CSN (cancer survivors network) was phenomenal. You guys really helped me through that difficult time. Thanks again.

I did one of those "enter your diet, family history, exercise etc" things on the net a couple of years ago and it came up with 83...so I have a good 30 odd years left. My wife came up with a few years less, so it looks like we are going out together!
Of course, you could get hit by a truck on the way home tonight...bummer, would you get a credit for the next time around?

And yet others who have known it, confronted it, have come through it and move forward with their lives and still achieve a state of blissfulness ?
Acquisition of knowledge doesn't necessarily detract from our ability to go on milking life for all its worth.
