Having recently acquired an equatorial mount with motor drives (thanks, Chris) for my ED80, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and sketch a solar active region. Apart from knowing that this is going to take some time to master, I was amazed by how much the region changed during the time it took to do the sketch. I'd noticed how rapidly the prominences change, but until I tried sketching, I hadn't seen this with active regions.

Just reinforces for me what a great observing target the sun is especially in hydrogen alpha (ie if anyone is wondering whether it's worth investing in Ha solar viewing, IMO the answer is a very big yes).

I would so love to see the sun, but I am just too scared. I didn't realise the sun went through changes so quickly - this must bo so amazing to see!

It is very safe, if you use eyepiece projection (and if your eyepieces are not plastic).

Also, I would recommend reducing the aperture (black paper with smaller opening, ~5cm in diameter, in front of your telescope will be good enough)
