Thought I'd finally post some pics. of my 10" f6 rebuild that I completed late last year.

Formerly a homemade cardboard tubed Dob. with a great mirror re-figured for me by Mark Suchting in 2000, I've now rebuilt it in an aluminium tube with a Moonlite focusser & EQ mounted using Parallax's rotating rings. There's some photos during construction, as well as showing the Novak 9 point primary cell that I'm lucky enough to have. Thanks to Mark's work, it produces great planetary/lunar views when cooled properly, about as sharp as my TSA-120.
I still use the old Dob. rocker box as a cradle to store it on...Waste not, want not!

Only problem is it's turned out to be built like a tank at 22-23kg & my G-11 struggles, even though I'm visual only. I just need an observatory & a bigger mount for it now!

A little Tak for a little Tak.....

What a cute little mount the Sky Patrol III by Takahashi is.....
Should be a fine companion for the FOA-60 refractor that is going to be my lightweight grab&go setup.

Sitting atop my Manfrotto MT055CXPro3 Carbon tripod is the Skywatcher Star Adventurer Wedge which is grasping my little DIY Dovetail plate bolted to the Sky Patrol III....

Just need the scope now :astron:

Got the chance at the weekend to put the fs60 back together after trashing the original focuser last year.

Feather touch focuser with the fs60 adapter and the adapter needed to be able to use the Takette accessories.

Was really impressed with the feather touch and chuffed to be able to use the scope properly again. Tak LE7mm plus powermate on Jupiter was so cool.

Last photo is the FS60 waiting in the background whilst it's big brother goes through its paces.

I must agree, I found the MoonLite was better (smoother) than the FT. My current FT has a couple of issues, it likes to catch on the N31T5 and being the lightweight version, it tends to bind if the mounting screws are done up tight...

My freshly restored 1990 Astro-Physics Star 12ED (120mm) doublet, serial No. 17 of roughly 100 or so made. These were Roland's answer to the Tak fluorite FC-100 doublets and the Vixen FL-102S, just with more aperture.

Having used it contemporaneously alongside a Tak TSA-120 triplet, they compare almost identically, with the only real difference being the Star 12 showed a TINY amount of yellow on the Lunar limb (COULD be prism diagonal doing that, so retesting when I have the new dielectric diagonal). Typical A-P through and through.

43mm imaging circle in a 61mm lens is quite remarkable Dunk. In fact, FSQ85 has imaging circle of 'only' 44mm...Speaking of which, I still do not understand how FSQ106 can have fully illuminated imaging circle of 88mm - almost the same size as the aperture - some Tak magic?

Camelopardalis
12-07-2017, 06:02 PM
Even more remarkable Suavi on a scope under US$400 :D but consequently my expectations aren't that grand...I sold my full frame a while back to focus more on smaller chips less demanding of glass...I became a little disillusioned with the behaviour not inexpensive DSLR lenses

So over mounted that I've had to stack multiple 14" Losmandy plates together to get purely for added weight and to get the camera further away for greater torque!

Need a shorter counter weight shaft!

LewisM

Should counterbalance it with another DSLR on the CW shaft Colin - dual imaging into the bargain. Seen it done a few times.

The RA motor acts as a counterweight, the mount tracks well and silently using just 4 AA batteries. Coarse adjustments are by the clutches, then both axes have slow motions to home in on the target before switching on tracking in right ascension.

The polar scope is surprisingly good as is the operation of the wedge.

Takahashi 76-DCU on an FTX alt-az mount. Really enjoying this as a grab and go. Works well with the manfrotto tripod.

Then I put an eyepiece to the FSQ106N today and was blown away, viewing the rather bright moon and Jupiter.

Made a few scope handles in the last week, here is one for Lewis for the old AP:

19.05 mm aluminium solid bar cut to 144mm then machined to 143mm & drilled and treaded for M8.
Glue grooves cut every 8mm,
Carbon fibre 20mm/22mm gloss tube epoxy glued over the aluminium,
M8x35mm S/S Button head socket screws

LewisM
07-08-2017, 10:20 AM
Absolutely - NEVER listen to the old twats that tell you you don't use an imaging scope for visual "It's an astrograph - you can't look through it". Pure dribble.

It's a MAGNIFICENT visual view through an FSQ - flat to the edges, pin point stars, port-hole like views.

LewisM
07-08-2017, 10:21 AM
OK, I might make a drive around after school-o'clock yet :) Itching to get it on the A-P.

Atmos
07-08-2017, 11:23 AM
Unless of course said astrograph doesn't have enough back focus for even the shortest of 1.25" diagonals and an EP ;)

ausastronomer
07-08-2017, 12:02 PM
Well that isn't exactly what the old twats who know what they are talking about will tell you.

Petzval Refractors like the Tak FSQ106 and the Televue NP101 and several others, will all perform superbly as visual telescopes. I have used them both for visual, I know :) These are both unobstructed systems of very high quality.

Where it all falls apart for using imaging scopes for visual is with Newtonian astrographs with > 30% central obstructions and insufficient backfocus to reach focus with an eyepiece and with other imaging specific scopes like Ritchey Chretiens and the Planewaves with large CO's.

Cheers,
John B

LewisM
07-08-2017, 12:10 PM
That is the problem - the urban myth goes wild, without the caveats attached - a true Chinese Whisper.

I was still staunchly told by 3 guys on Cloudy Nights that an FSQ cannot be a good visual instrument because it's an astrograph. You just grin and smile.

LewisM
07-08-2017, 12:13 PM
I used each and every FSQ 85 and 106 I have owned for visual without a hitch. Just use the Tak 1.25" diagonal and where needed the "In" adaptor, and all good to go.

LewisM
07-08-2017, 12:15 PM
Now let's see if a certain red and black Italian light bucket will come to focus for visual :) :D Good luck with it :)

Atmos
07-08-2017, 12:32 PM
I'm sure that with a helical focuser I could straight through visual but it would be mighty uncomfortable without a variabale height observing bed ;)

Mewlon-210 sitting on my EQ6. Didn't get much time (AGAIN!) before the clouds rolled in but long enough to get a quite nicely centred secondary shadow. Collimation is now good enough to split a double, now just need some half decent seeing to actually be able to see something that resembles a diffraction ring.

Kunama

Fsq 85edx for travel and grab and go.
Just for visual at this stage. The baby q is mounted on a manfrotto fluid video head (1.6kg) rated to 7kg and gitzo carbon fibre tripod (3kg) and rated to a whopping 40kg load. Really light weight comes in under 8 kg total + eyepiece.

A few little tidy-up changes to the AZ-EQ6GT mount......

It now has a pair of ADM saddle clamps which have been draw-filed and polished to make them pretty....

The saddle locking knobs have been recessed into the top bar by 4mm to turn the 'Slide-in' map into a 'Tip-in' one.....

The counterweight bar now has a flat ground into it that allows dual-mount mode without the threat of the c/w bar rotating as the factory screw is nearly useless....

The itty-bitty factory clamping screw has been replaced with an industrial strength M12 HT clamping lever.... (the lever handle was a bit long so out with the hacksaw, etch primer and satin black epoxy..)

The custom DewBuster Controller is now fitted to the top of the mount using a Polemaster adapter making for easy removal and less stuff hanging off the mount...

Hi Folks,

No they're not some strange pair of binos, although you could try if you have very wide set eyes. I just acquired the 2nd of these 2 lenses. They are a pair of Nikon 400mm f2.8 lenses for my take on the dragonfly array thing (x2 for now), - "Bumble Bee" :D. for a 400mm f2 ... (equivalent exposure) or 600mm f2.8 equiv. or 800mm f4 equiv. with 1.5x and 2x Teleconverters resp. (Need to test the Image Quality and acquire some more Nikon TCs before going crazy on that (the TC) route).

I now need to find time to make a fixture to hold both lenses on a mount whilst also (possibly/probably) providing a means of optical alignment. I need to rope in my brother for some of his wonderful welding work (Hi Den)

Finally got around to assembling my very rare circa 1960 Polarex (Unitron) 6" achromat after a few years in storage in preparation for a ground up restoration. I'm hoping the tube and astrographic camera will fit in my conservatory as the mount alone to the top of the cradle is 2800mm and the tube perhaps a little longer. It seems a pity that the telescope is destined to be for display only as the construction of an observatory is out of the question. The complete set up has a weight clock drive, F4 astrographic camera and Polarex 4" F15 guide scope plus a 2" F10 finder scope and the cast iron base measures 800mm x 600mm. I estimate the overall weight to be around 350kg's.

Finally got it all together and am very pleased with the outcome of my latest scope.
It's a TSA 120 on a G11 with Gemini 1. I have recently purchased a pair of Zeiss binos from Denis together with the Baarder T2 prism and because I was so sure that I would have problems coming to focus I also purchased the 1.7 GPC. I am delighted to find that I can come to focus by the use of a 2" TV x2 powermate and the standard Tak 2" 75mm extension piece used for straight through viewing without the need for the GPC, this means the 30mm prisms in the binos will not be restricted by the GPC which only measures 24.5mm diameter.
I have mated the binos with a pair of 8/24 Baarder Mk IV zoom eyepieces so the magnification range is 75 to 225, well within the TSA's capacity.
I spent last night observing Saturn and came in feeling that the not inconsiderable sum of money the binos and eyepieces cost was money well spent.

They look like a great set of bino's David. I've found my Tak "Twin View" bino's about the best I've ever tried so far. I think the TSA-120 is possibly the best all round refractor ever produced by Tak as it excellent for visual and AP. I owned a TOA-130s and a TOA-130NFB but think the TSA-120 is more versatile.

My latest scope purchase :D :

With thanks to Simon :thanx: , I now have the perfect scope for my public outreach efforts at Mount Stromlo..... (I really never felt comfortable having people climb a ladder to my big scope's eyepiece)

For the princely sum of $250, I bought Simon's 10" GSO Dobsonian which had been unused for quite some time. The scope came with a perfect laser collimator, 8x50 RACI finder and Telrad finder as well as an extension tube.

Though dry stored, the mirror had a seriously thick layer of dust that had accumulated during storage. I got the scope home and dismantled it completely into its components, then washed both mirrors, the primary was left to soak for a few minutes before a soap and water wash revealed a decent mirror that had been hidden by the dust.

I then dismantled the focuser, cleaned it and replaced one screw and refitted it. Then I noted that the secondary was too far down the tube to line up with the focuser axis, so after a minor modification to the mounting, I had the optics aligned as they should be. A quick collimation with the laser showed all was lining up well but the collimation screws were a nuisance so out they came to be replaced with M4 x 30mm stainless cap screws.

Hoping for a "First Light" tonight

Who says I am an equipment snob

Hi Darren
Is there a noticeable difference between the Baader bbhs diagonal vs the Baader Clicklock and if so what

bigjoe
03-02-2018, 06:52 PM
With doubles and these Apos youll notice how much more intense the star colour contrasts will be ..eg.. Gamma Volantis and Upsilon Carinae.... an easy catch for your new Tak..and there just near or part of the Diamond Cross Asterism ...Enjoy!
Good hint Darren...I actually washed out colours and brightness etc.to get down to 200kb..The upload kept getting rejected!

Hi Andrew,

The major difference is the cost!
The minor differences I don't think are that noticeable for me visually, but everyone is different.
Possibly a tad brighter but impossible to confirm without side by side comparison. You could try a prism diagonal, depends if your telescope has been configured for this.

Enjoy

bigjoe
03-02-2018, 07:44 PM
On that note too..I find a prism diagonal works better above F7 ,esp in a Maksutov ..where the Baader ZEISS PRISM is outstanding on Planetary detail from what I witnessed against a GSO mirrorred one.

Hi all,

It’s been nearly a year since I got my 105mm and I have been using it exclusively for imaging, although not as often as I would like to.

Inspired by a quick glance through this beautiful instrument when I first got the telescope, I finally got a system to also start enjoying visual astronomy.

Just need to wait for clouds to pass...

Thanks Darren. I was going to get AYO II but in the end went for the M2C, as I do not need a dual mounting system and, if one beautiful day in the distant future, the universe will allow me to host a larger refractor, I can always upgrade the mount and keep the tripod.

As 95% of my visual work is done with a 4” doublet and can say that the views of the moon and planets from our heavily light polluted locations are worth while with a meager 100mm of aperture. Surfing the moon at 185x with binoviewers or Jupiter with a nice planetary EP at 200x is bliss :)

Lovely setup

Slawomir
23-02-2018, 06:52 AM
Visual astronomy is an uncharted territory to me, so I look forward to using this minimalistic setup for stargazing. 3.5mm Delos will give 180 magnification which should be about max for comfortable viewing with a manual mount. Now I just need to get a nice medium power eyepiece...

The tripod is of good quality and the mount fits on the HAL130 for carrying bigger scopes.

I've tried the Vixen APZ out with different scopes.
The lightweight tripod it comes with is good for the William Optics 66 but my NP101is is too heavy for the TL130 tripod - takes a few seconds to settle with legs extended.

The NP weighs about 13 pounds plus diagonal and eyepiece, so about 15 or 16 pounds total.

The NP does ride well on the APZ mount with HAL130 tripod - settles in about one second with legs fully extended.

Had the NP101 and FC100 out last night to compare the views and it wasn't much help in deciding which one to keep in the long term. Star tests were very similar, even to the point of both patterns being a little cleaner inside focus. The most noticeable difference was less precise focusing needed at f/7.4 vs f/5.4. Both gorgeous scopes, especially once the FT focuser goes on the FC.

Nice scope Bob. How does the AZ4 perform - smooth for small movements?
Where did you get the Finder base?

I ordered the Finder Base directly from Ali Express. From memory, it cost about $30 US with postage and took about 2 weeks to arrive. In their extended list of Astronomy items, look from about the 40th page onwards.

The AZ4 works well for me, and the tension is easy to adjust. It has a tiny bit of slack in it sometimes, but does not bother me.

Thanks Bob, I've ordered one of those and a similar black one with a flat base. I'm planning on attaching the finder base to the top of the clamshell for finders or a guide scope.

My FSQ-85EDX "Baby Q" was finally weened and out of nappies. She's grown a LOT overnight!

Wonder if she'll further blossom into an FSQ-130...;)

Col, you don't want to know how many Baby Q's, 106N's and 106ED's I have had lol (and if my wife ever finds out...ouch!!!)

So, must be time for an FSQ130, especially with the new job :)

Why would I want to do that? SXP is perfect.

TOA 150 is too heavy and too long for my transportation requirements. Not all of us have an observatory :P

Wow, Matt, where did you get this beauty made? I am interested in an 18" and looked at SDM, among other sites. Did you have it made in Australia? Is the mirror an Obsession one, or a Zambuto, for example?

Cheers,
Richard

Hello Richard, as Colin mentioned, it's a home made scope, though I did farm out the welding to 'Revolution Welding' in Queanbeyan and the powder coating to ACT Powder Coating Services also in Qbn.
the primary is an 18" F3.54 by Mark Suchting, lots more on the project here: http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=164454

Thanks Richard, I will definitely bring this to SA on my next trip.

:thanx: somehow I just couldn't leave it without some alteration, the 'skin' is 0.25mm kevlar/carbon fibre from Protech in USA,

My first telescope was a National Geographic 3in desktop Dobson, a 20mm and a 4mm eyepiece and a 2X Barlow
I then purchased this set used about two months ago
An NEQ6 Skywatcher mount and a Meade LX80 203.2 mm f/10
The Meade come with 26mm Super Plossl.
I found I was unable to left the NEQ6 due to my lung condition so today I purchased a new HEQ5 which I can lift.

Guinevre was gorgeous, but I think Excalibur is indeed a finely crafted weapon for the stars.

The blue CF is just the bee's knees.

Compare this to the famous blue sonotube abomination from You Know Who

Nice little Mak, may I suggest that you wrap it in reflective type insulation foam, helps a lot with calming the tube currents of Maks...

Even those reflective car sunshades wrapped around the tube and extending past the front for dew control...
