Currently experiencing winds in excess of 70kmh with rain almost horizontal. One of the trees in the front yard may not survive(I hope), it blocks views to the south from here. Winds getting stronger.

Adrian

5 mins after I posted the wind died as quick as it started, and the tree survived

Same here Adrian, it has been lousy for months, but I suppose we do need the water.

Absolute pile of toss of a winter it has been. I can't remember the last time we had more sun than cloud :mad2: It's been nothing but cloud, rain and biting cold flat out since May. My local park is impossible to use because it's muddy and waterlogged, and has been continuously for months  Nope, don't need anymore rain here either, what we need is some bloody clear skies and sunshine to warm us up and dry out this cold damp mess.

I never thought it was possible, but this year is infinately worse than the inappropriately named IYA 2009

Atm though, skies are clear, but geez I'll swear on my life and everything I own that tonight will be write off.

The worst thing is, once this unlamented winter finally digs its grave, we've got the spring burnoffs to look forward to , and as we all know those are invariably conducted on the warmest, clearest days :mad2:

It's an absolute shocker here in Melb.

As I predicted, it is now full Melbournecast yet again, and I wouldn't be surprised if we get rain ( ) later. If this parasitic flesh-eating infection of a climate was "normal" in the 80's and 90's as some say, I am super glad I wasn't old enough to "appreciate" it.

Must be very easy being a met guy here, all you'd have to do is say "clouds and rain tomorrow , max temp 12C" for the entire crappy half of the year!

It was clear for the last 8 (or 9?) nights in a row in Brisbane - first I've seen that happen all this year...

Went to Maidenwell/Kilcoy/Blackbutt area over the weekend. Overcast and drizzly in Roma beautiful clear in Maidenwell/Kilcoy/Blackbutt and I didn't have anything with me except my eyes. Wish we had skies like this for everyone.

Well we got back to Roma not a cloud in the sky too tired to do any astro. Got out of bed this morning and it was pouring rain and as been on/off all day. Just received my "new" Orion AutoGuider so maybe I am to blame for the weather this way:mad2:.

I'd love to make fun of the Melbourne weather but as we here in Brisbane have had our wettest ever August with more than double our average rainfall I'll resist the temptation!!!

A lovely pic though and does bring back memories of visits to Melbourne....;)

Cheers,
Mario

Sunday, Monday and maybe Tuesday nights are looking promising for Melbourne. And by pure good fortune it also happens to be mid-semester break

Too bad about the moon, but on Monday night there'll be about 3 hours of darkness cloud before it rises.

just a fun fact......this has been (and still is) the coldest winter in 14 years. Compared with last year, temps are about 2-5C lower Cloudtoria-wide and rainfall 2-3x higher  Cheers for that global warming.

Getting out of this terrible winter will be like getting out of a mile-deep pit with marble walls using only your hands and feet.

Very infuriating reading:

I am too enraged to let this latest golden effort by Melbourne Nuclear Winter to slide.

Sunday:
Forecast .... sunny
Actual ....... full Melbournecast the whole day with not one freaking picosecond of sunshine

Today and Tomorrow
Forcast ..... sunny. Cloud increasing Tuesday
Actual ....... cloud increasing bloody TONIGHT

I can't believe it. This is just copletely unfathomable. There's that rage that you just want to lay right into a punching bag or a pillow or go on a cursing rampage but you can't because the reality of what just happened is so demented that, that the human brain just collapses in on itself.

My scopes are just sitting in the garage becoming vintage telescopes with hardly any use !
I feel for you Sab, nice new 12" dob........little use..........nuclear winter.....

Surprisingly enough I got some good use out of it since taking delivery, all within a month of the late April pick up date. It's been through some of the crappiest dew imaginable and got enough sessions in to get the hang of it and notice the improvement in performance over the original scope even though the optics are exactly the same :)

But I hadn't been able to use it on Jupiter, and now we are entering mid-season (last time i was out, Jupiter didn't even make it to the meridian before sunrise)......puts it in perspective :(

I have a theory....u know how british people settled Melbourne... I have formulated a possible explaination for our vastly innappropriate locale...I do believe that those British folk were trying to replicate their homeland climate. Boy howdy how well they have succeeded. :(

If it was me, I would've settled Port Hedland or Broome. Now those climates are to bloody die for :drink:

Some other places named Melbourne are also incidentally in terminally cloudy and/or climatically stuffed locations:

e.g. Melbourne, Nova Scotia. (Nova Scotia = Canadian Victoria)
Melbourne, Derbyshire UK. (UK = European Victoria)
Mount Melbourne, Antarctica (Antarctica = Earthian Victoria)
Melbourne, California. (right on the coast north of San Fran... an infamously cold and foggy/cloudy area)

Absolutely beautiful weather here at the moment, not a cloud in the sky. But no time to take the scope out until the weekend when they have forecast rain and possible thunder storms.

Well they were right absolutely 100% cloud cover. Astronomy out again this weekend so might drive up to Yarraman again this weekend. Still looking for the perfect astro site (for me anyway) we are down to 3 blocks of land. All over 1 acre.
