Rather stupidly I attempted to clean the inside of the lens with distilled water and then dry it clean. As most sensible people would have guessed this has left marks. What do I do? do I need to buy a complete new assembly? and what is this likely to cost. Is it just a case of screwing in a new unit?:screwy:

Hi Peter, can you explain a bit more about what you have done. Did you take the meniscus lens off the front of the telescope to clean it?

Hi Peter, some marks on or even damage to the lens coatings will make little difference to the views and you won't need to replace the lens.

Marks or residue inside the scope are likely to be oil or grease and therefore alcohol soluble - pure isopropyl or one of the commercial lens cleaners applied with pure cotton balls and no pressure would likely remove the marks.

As Trevor mentioned though, you need to supply more detail about exactly what you cleaned and what type of marks you were cleaning off the lens. Use a puffer, then a soft brush to remove any grit before cleaning with cotton balls.
