aurora alert-anyone well positioned to see it?

got an aurora alert-the first in a long long time about an hour ago-anyone in the south island of nz or tassie who can see auroral activity?

Just had a look, gorgeous night. I can see the milky way from horizon to horizon. No aurora though :(
Can't stay up much later tonight either... oh well.

They had it on the news last nigth, and said the Northern Hemisphere were in for a spectacular show!! Not sure how aurora work - same for both hemispheres??
Would love to see some one day!!

That is interesting, maybe the tilt of the earths axis may make auroras stronger or weaker at certain times of the year. I only ever seeing an Aurora once in my life in Perth. I was quite young and can't remember specific details but a green glow coming from the south. I lived in a very dark area at the time so i suppose is the reason for viewing it easily.

If you have an iPhone you can get two or three days advanced warning of possible auroras using NASA's 3D Sun app.
Plus a lot of other sun stuff.

I have seen aurora as far north as off Kempsey in NSW - that was over 10 years ago, and it is the furthest north I have ever seen the southern aurora.
In the late 70's there were some displays visible from Melbourne that I saw, even with the skyglow of the city.

I would advise all to keep a lookout to the south on this new moon time - you may be surprised!

I have been signed up for years but have regretfully, yet to sight an aurora personally

I'd even be willing to catch a plane to Tassie or NZ if I could be sure to see this incredible sight at least once in my life with my own eyes

I have also heard of reports of aurora sighting from near Sydney, so its most certainly possible-but obviously must be from a super dark site I suppose

Great link, has a Java map (Aurora Oval) provide a predictive viewing circle. Haven't spent a lot of time on it yet, but saw the the word "Klaus". Not sure what it means but assume it is an intensity measurement of some kind.

Yes, I can remember seeing a red glow to the south In Melbourne late 70's as well, it took me a while to realise it was the aurora.

Went for a drive today with a few mates.
Rain + clouds, but just as we were giving up got out of the car and had another look. couple of mins of aurora!

No colour but still that was awesome.
Hoping for more...!
