Whirlpool Galaxy Down Under

Hi there,

Here's a shot i took recently with my Atik 11002 which i was pretty happy with considering the galaxy was very close to the Horizon, it was taken at ASWA's deep sky site in Tammin where the horizons' are fantastic, so are the double G's AHHHH!!

On the same night i took the beginning of this video, any help on compression without losing video quality please i beg you HELP ME :thumbsup:.

Any ideas on video compression?, I've tried Virtual Dud, i mean Dub:) and it can get the video at internet delivery speed and size but it just loses its resolution, is it a happy medium thing or is there software that does a better job i wonder?

I think because of the video frame size you'll lose resolution no matter what with compression. You could reduce the frame size and preserve some of the resolution to be suitable for web viewing(streaming). :shrug:

For web delivery I find the flash video encoder very easy to use. It accepts a wide variety of CODEC as input and outputs a straight FLV that can be embedded in a swf file or even played just straight off. There are a couple od FLV players out there. I use it all the time. I took some videos last night with a SONY handycam, saved as MPGs. About 100MB worth in 10 files or so. Encoded the whole lot at PAL res under 2.5MB FLV file without any noticeable loss.

I re-sized the video and that also allowed me to increase the bitrate which has made the video better resolution, but still kinda was hoping someone out there knows how to have a fullscreen high res video happening.

P.S. Tammin had no wind at all two new moons ago and dew was at a minimum, perfect conditions until around 3:30am and then a slight breeze came up.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the image and video link.

The image of M51 is a beauty. Had the pleasure of looking at this object
from a dark sky locale at +33 26' North latitude through 36" of aperture
courtesy of Larry Mitchell. At those latitudes in that much aperture,
you can put aside the camera and let the eyeball take in the extraodinary
detail.

The time lapse was fantastic!

Shane, great capture with a lot more detail visible than I would expect from low altitudes. :thumbsup:...this is a bit like those up north get of Omega Cen and Cen A :P

Very nice galaxy and the time lapse!

As the time lapse is quite long it is hard to get a file size reasonable for Internet sharing without loosing quality. You may want to try AVCHD H.264 encoding:

The Whirpool Galaxy shot is fantastic, really crisp. My only minor nit is that the sky is too black maybe a little clipped?
